Campy’s Pizza runs winning streak to 18 in Grebb League boys action
The boys division of the Budd Grebb Memorial Basketball League opened up the second half of the regular season Thursday night and history was made as Campy’s Pizza won its 18th consecutive game.
However, Campy’s (6-0) started slow in its 87-51 win over Union Cleaners (0-6) and head coach Naz Victoria spoke about it.
“I think the pressure of the record played into us getting off to a slow start,” he said. “I appreciate the record, but if we don’t win the championship, it is totally meaningless.
“But it is nice for the kids and this team is going to be judged on whether we win the championship again.
“The kids have such high expectations and anything less than a second straight title will be a disappointment as it is our main goal and they didn’t even celebrate the record after the game.”
Lyndon Henderson (Monessen) was on a mission Thursday and he finished with a game-high 33 points for Campy’s while Chris Peccon (Ringgold) had 18 and Tommy Hepple (Belle Vernon Area) had 12.
Luke Wyvratt (Ringgold) scored 16 points for Union Cleaners and Noah Pierce (Thomas Jefferson) added 11.
The win clinched a playoff sport for Campy’s.
Farmers Insurance (5-1) erased a 16-2 deficit to start the game and came back to beat Northwood Realty (3-3), 62-57.
“We got off to a slow start but regrouped and were able to get back in the game with defense,” said Farmers coach Dana Zajicek. “Offensively we did a good job of moving the ball for open shots and layups.”
Jared Hartman (Belle Vernon Area) had the hot hand for Farmers as he finished with 26 points.
Jeremiah White (Ringgold) added 16 points while Legend Davis (Charleroi) and Philip Pace (Brownsville) each scored 10 points with Davis adding 10 rebounds.
Jacob Bobbs (Beth-Center) led Northwood with 17 points and Dishon Howell (Monessen) added 15 while Cochise Ryan (California) grabbed 12 rebounds.
The win moved Farmers’ magic number for a playoff spot to one.
Bee Graphix solidified its playoff chances with a 64-34 win over Dairy Queen.
“We played well together on offense and played good defense,” Bee Graphix coach Bob Kennedy said. “There was no selfishness on the floor and it made all of the difference in the world.”
Jaeden Zuzak (California) led Bee Graphix with 14 points while Joel Lonigro (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 13, Jaden Taylor (Ringgold) had 11 and Justin Novak (Frazier) scored 10.
Marty Foster (Charleroi) and Nathan Brudnock (West Greene) looked best for Dairy Queen with seven points apiece.
Bee Graphix reduced its magic number for a playoff spot to two with the win.
Play in the boys division resumes Tuesday when Farmers Insurance faces Northwood at 7 p.m., Dairy Queen plays Bee Graphix at 8 p.m. and Campy’s Pizza takes on Union Cleaners at 9 p.m.
