Grebb girls league playoff picture taking form
Regular season action in the girls division of the Budd Grebb Memorial Basketball League is winding down, and the playoff picture is starting to take form.
Four teams advance to the postseason, and the lone team that had clinched a playoff spot heading into Monday’s games was Dairy Queen (7-0). Dairy Queen didn’t slow down with a 67-52 win over Dax Thomas State Farm (4-3).
A late first-half surge did in State Farm.
“It was a great ball game and I thought the difference was late in the first half when their pressure tired us out a bit,” said State Farm coach Tom Rodriguez. “Their guards didn’t give us a break and we gave up too many easy buckets.
“Dairy Queen is the best in this league right now, but we will go back to work and hope to get to see them in the playoffs.”
DQ put five players in double figures as Brooke Poling (Frazier) led the way with 19 points, Natasha Yanief (Thomas Jefferson) added 15, Olivia Greco (Beth-Center) had 12 points and eight rebounds, Emily Venick (Trinity) scored 11 and Chloe Jaworski (Mount Pleasant) tallied 10.
Maddy Trainer (Thomas Jefferson) scored a game-high 23 points to lead State Farm, while Rachel Wobrak (Belle Vernon) had 15 points and eight rebounds.
AMD Industries (5-2) had no problem with Duda Farms (3-4), 76-33.
“The girls played great defense, had a lot of steals, forced a lot of turnovers, blocked several shots and rebounded well,” said AMD coach Bill Wagner. “The good defense created a number of fast break opportunities.”
Duda Farms coach Larry Cash was disappointed with his team’s effort.
“The effort wasn’t there in this game and they outran us,” he said. “It just wasn’t our night.”
Lindsay Steeber (BV) led the way for AMD with 19 points, while Arielle Teeter (Brownsville) added 14 and Kaelyn Venick (Trinity) had 12.
Sierra Twigg (Frazier) led Duda with 12 points.
Cedarbrook (2-5) downed Lee Supply (0-7), 47-23, to keep its playoff hopes alive.
“We played well from start to finish and put a full game together,” said Cedarbrook coach Dennis Stitch. “We played really well on defense in the second half.”
Baileigh Bishop (Connellsville) led Cedarbrook with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Deja Gudel (California) led Lee Supply with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Cedarbrook remains a game behind Duda Farms for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Both AMD and State Farm can clinch a playoff spot on Wednesday, while Lee Supply is the only team that has been eliminated from playoff contention.
Girls action resumes Wednesday as Cedarbrook plays State Farm at 7 p.m., Lee Supply faces AMD at 8, and Dairy Queen plays Duda Farms at 9.
