Dairy Queen girls cap undefeated regular season
The girls division of the Budd Grebb Memorial Basketball League ended its regular season Wednesday, and while playoff seeds had already been determined, the effort and action was competitive.
Dairy Queen (10-0) completed an undefeated regular season by defeating Duda Farms (4-6), 64-30.
“It was nice to get to coach these girls and get to coach team tonight and be a part of their regular season,” said Bill Greco, who filled in as coach for his wife Melanie. “Everyone, on both teams, played pretty well.”
“I am once again proud of the girls because they fought like a team,” said Duda Farms coach Larry Cash. “Teams like that are special when you are short-handed, but we play them again Monday and hopefully it will be different.”
Natasha Yanief (Thomas Jefferson) led Dairy Queen with 24 points, while Brooke Poling (Frazier) added 11.
Emma Seto (Brownsville) led Duda Farms with 10 points.
A rematch between the teams will take place Monday in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m.
AMD Industries (7-3) and Dax Thomas State Farm (7-3) earned wins to clinch a tie for second place.
In a game that was closer than expected, AMD Industries defeated Lee Supply, 52-42.
“It was a tough game and we had a lot of missed layups and shots,” said AMD Industries coach Bill Wagner. “We had trouble keeping a handle on the ball, but the girls fought hard and pulled out a hard-fought win.
“Lindsay Steeber had a real good push in the second half to help us win.”
Steeber (Belle Vernon) scored 18 points. Farrah Reader (BV) added 16 and Bella Skobel (Charleroi) had 12.
“It was a very hard-fought game that we left,” said Lee Suppy coach Dan Lynch. “Ca’Mari Walden and Jenna Dawson were on fire and we are sad to lose our two seniors, Deja Gudel and Caileigh Bolin.”
Dawson (BV) led the way with 16 points and Walden (California) scored 13.
State Farm Insurance defeated Cedarbrook, 64-33.
“This was a good finish to our season and needed to get our defense back on track,” said State Farm coach Tom Rodriguez. “We are looking forward to Monday.”
Maddy Trainor (TJ) had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the winners, while Chloe Prodash (Serra Catholic) had 21 and Rachel Wobrak (BV) had 12.
Baileigh Bishop (Connellsville) scored 24 points for Cedarbrook.
State Farm and AMD Industries, who split their two regular season games, will meet in the other semifinal game Monday at 7 p.m.
