Sleith on a roll at Saint Vincent

When Alona Sleith signed on at Saint Vincent, those who follow local softball knew that she would have a chance to make a big-time first impression.
After all, she helped lead Yough to the PIAA Class AAA softball championship in 2016.
So far this season, her first at Saint Vincent, she is owning opponents.
Take Monday for example.
Saint Vincent improved to 11-3 as it swept Geneva, and in the opener, Sleith improved to 3-1 on the mound as she struck out seven batters in a 5-4 win.
In the nightcap, Sleith drove in a career-high six runs.
In the fourth inning, Sleith hit a three-run home run, her sixth of the season.
Sleith is fourth on the team with a .444 average and her team-leading 22 RBIs are twice as many as anyone else on the team.
She also leads the team with 38 total bases and a 1.056 slugging percentage.
Already this season, Sleith has earned a pair of PAC Rookie of the Week distinctions and an ECAC South Division III Rookie of the Week honor.
Another member of the team with local ties is sophomore Victoria Culver, who graduated from Connellsville.
She is second on the team with a .486 batting average and third on the team with 27 total bases.
PSU-Fayette Women’s hoops
Scott Hillen is piecing together a solid recruiting class for his women’s basketball team at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, and he is excited about the future.
“We are working to improve out numbers and talent,” he said. “There are still a few more players we are trying to get on board so we will see where things shake out.”
Three local players, Charleroi’s Kaitlyn Riley, Ringgold’s Taylor Costa and Southmoreland’s Carissa Cyphert have all signed while Turkeyfoot’s Julie Conn is also in the fold.
“It has been an exciting month for our program and we are hoping to get a few more,” Hillen said. “The goal is to keep getting better by bringing in talented student-athletes.”
Christner starting at Mercyhurst
A year ago, Megan Christner played a pivotal role in helping lead Belle Vernon to the WPIAL Class AAAA softball championship.
This year, she is starting for Mercyhurst.
The lefty has started 10 of 12 games for the team and while she is only hitting .125 at the moment, she is second on the team with four stolen bases in five attempts.
Two more BVA softball players
Christner isn’t the only Belle Vernon softball player contributing at the next level.
Sophomore Erica Amorso is hitting .317 for Bethany, and is tied for the team lead in triples.
Fellow sophomore Alyssa Larson has started six games for Notre Dame College of South Euclid, Ohio, and is hitting .263.
