Cal U’s Friend honored again
California University of Pa. seniors Julie Friend and Summer Hill led the way as a number of Vulcans received USTFCCCA all-region honors given to the top-5 individuals in each event across the region.
Friend received all-region recognition in the 800, 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Uniontown graduate is the only athlete in NCAA Division II to rank first in any region in four individual events. Friend has now received 18 all-region honors in track & field, the most in school history.
Hill gained all-region status in the 800 and 1,500, bringing her track & field all-region honors to 17.
Kailah Holmes earned all-region status in the triple jump for the third time in her career.
Brett George and Jae’Len Means also received all-region status.
Means, a junior, was recognized for his performances in the 100 and 200 to push his career total to seven times.
George, a sophomore, received all-region status in the 1,500.

Local players on PAC squad
Saint Vincent College sophomore pitcher and Connellsville graduate Jimmy Malone was named to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference first team.
Bearcat teammate Bobby Finn, first baseman, also earned first-team honors.
Waynesburg junior second baseman Tyler Reis was named to the second team. The Yellow Jackets’ Justin Buberl (Soph., first baseman) and Mitch Nordstrom (Jr., outfielder) received honorable mention honors. Buberl also was named the PAC Sportsmanship Team.
Thomas More senior second baseman Ben Laumann was named the PAC Player of the Year and the Saints’ Jeff Hetzer was the Coach of the Year. Washington & Jefferson senior Bryce Schnatterly was named the conference Pitcher of the Year.
