Burd throws no-hitter in 4-0 victory
Mia Burd threw a no-hitter and Brooke Miller belted a home run and drove in three runs as Connellsville advanced to the WPIAL Class AAAAA softball semifinals Monday with a 4-0 win over Franklin Regional at Plum High School.
The Lady Falcons (13-6) advance to play top-seeded West Allegheny (18-1) in the semifinal round on Wednesday at Baldwin at 6 p.m. West Allegheny defeated Trinity, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.
Burd struck out six and walked four in the no-hitter.
Burd and Franklin Regional’s Angalee Beall kept the game scoreless through the first four innings.
Connellsville scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kaybree Benton walked and Garrity Bungard went in to pinch run. Abbi Frigulietti bunted, but the throw to first was wide and Bungard scored from first. Burd was safe on a fielder’s choice and Miller laced a two-run single.
Miller added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a solo home run.
The Lady Panthers, seeded No. 4, close the season with an overall record of 15-7.
