Friend, Hill honored

California University of Pa. seniors Julie Friend and Summer Hill added more laurels to their stellar careers as they were chosen for the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The pair is now eligible for the Google Cloud Academic All-America Teams that will be announced in June. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.30 GPA or higher and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their college or university.

Friend was a CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-America selection last year. The Uniontown graduate earned NCAA Division II First-Team All-America honors by placing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Friend sports a 3.90 cumulative GPA as she pursues a master’s degree in exercise science and health promotion with a concentration in rehabilitation science. She graduated in 2017 with her bachelor’s degree in biology with a concentration in pre-medicine, plus a minor in chemistry, with a 3.42 GPA.

This is the third consecutive nomination for Hill after earning CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in both 2016 and 2017. Hill has a 3.91 GPA as she finishes her master’s degree in exercise science and health promotion with a concentration in performance enhancement and injury prevention. She completed her bachelor’s degree in 2017 with a 3.89 cumulative GPA and a degree in sport management.

Section 3-AAAA teams announced

Belle Vernon’s Josh Hoffman (Jr., INF), Ringgold’s Koby Bobash (Jr., INF), Ryan Varley (Sr., P), and Bo Haines (Sr., OF), Elizabeth Forward’s Nate Holma (Jr., OF), Uniontown’s Conner DeMoss (Sr., P) were all selected to the first team of the 2018 Section 3-AAAA Coaches’ All-Section Teams.

Ringgold’s Bob Boyer (Jr., C) and Chase Angotti (Jr., P), Belle Vernon’s Jake Rathway (Sr., INF) and Joe Sabolek (Sr., P), Uniontown’s Kaine Frey (Sr., INF) and Jeremy Saliba (Sr., P), and Elizabeth Forward’s JC Schmidt (Soph., INF) were all second-team selections.

Honorable mention honors went to Belle Vernon’s Cole Naylor (Jr., C) and Garrett Greco (Fr., OF), Elizabeth Forward’s Ryan Antkowiak (Sr., INF), and Ringgold’s Luke Winterbottom (Sr., OF).
