Bentworth’s Hamstra wins 60th career match
ELLSWORTH — Bentworth clinched at least a share of the Section 2-A title Monday night with its win over Charleroi, and coach Tyler Hamstra tied the program record of 60 wins.
“I have been blessed with a lot of great players these five years I have been the head coach,” said Hamstra, who would not take credit for the record. “I have been so fortunate since Day One to have some of the better players in the section and they do all of the hard work.
“Tonight, we played well and passed well, and I am happy with how all of our girls did.”
Hamstra ties the record held by former Bentworth, and ironically Charleroi, head coach Dan Haywood.
Bentworth goalkeeper Cande Kossel extended her school record with her 50th win.
“She is a four-year starter, a two-year All-WPIAL player and a three-time All-Section player,” praised Hamstra. “She has been the best keeper in Single-A for a while.”
“I am not displeased with how we played because Bentworth is a really good team,” said Charleroi coach Traci Fleming. “I don’t mind getting beat because we hustled and had we played like this two or three other games this season, we would have a few more wins under our belt.
“We just seem to step up against this team, but wow, did they have some nice shots.”
Jocelyn Timlin recorded a natural hat trick with three first half goals and Paige Marshalek recorded a hat trick, as well, to pace Bentworth.
The Lady Bearcats (9-0, 11-1) got on the board with 33:39 to play when Marshalek played a beautiful corner kick from Rori Schreiber out of the air and buried in the back of the net.
“She has been working on it a little bit and when she places it, it is actually excellent,” Hamstra said of Schreiber’s corner kick. “She put it in the right place and played well, as did Shayla Rokicki.
“She is somebody who has really come along and while everyone else talks about our strikers, everyone else is playing well, too.”
Bentworth led 5-0 at the half. Joining Marshalek in the second half scoring column was Rokicki, with a pair of goals, and Schreiber.
The Lady Bearcats will look to clinch the outright section title Wednesday at second-place Chartiers Houston, while Charleroi (4-5, 4-4) looks to earn a potential playoff spot at home against McGuffey.
