Stephenson stars as Waynesburg holds off Burrell, 21-20

By The 1 min read

Lance Stephenson ran for 238 yards and three touchdowns as Wayneburg Central defeated Burrell, 21-20, in a non-conference football game Friday night.

Stephenson scored on touchdown runs of 20 and seven yards in the first quarter to give coach Chad Coss’s Raiders (2-7) a 14-0 lead.

The Bucs, guided by former Albert Gallatin coach Shawn Liotta, cut the lead to 14-7 on Seth Fishbach’s 16-yard touchdown pass from Logan Phillips.

Stephenson countered that with a one-yard TD run in the second quarter for a 21-7 Waynesburg lead as Scott Benco converted all three of his extra-point kicks, which wound up being crucial to the outcome.

Fishbach used his arm to give Burrell its second touchdown with a nine-yard pass to Cole Clark that made it 21-14.

Phillips completed a seven-yard TD pass to Lukas Kastelic in the fourth quarter but the extra point was missed after an unsportsmanlike penalty pushed the kick attempt back 15 yards.

The Raiders forced and recovered a fumble on the Bucs’ final drive to preserve the win.

Waynesburg hosts Keystone Oaks in its final game of the season this Friday.
