Strong second quarter leads Hempfield over Connellsville, 62-39
Hempfield took control in the second quarter en route to a 62-39 Section 3-AAAAAA victory over Connellsville on Saturday at Hempfield Area High School.
The Spartans (2-7, 9-10) outscored the Falcons, 24-7, in the second for a 35-14 halftime lead. Connellsville (3-6, 7-12) cut the deficit to 46-29 after holding a 15-11 edge in the third, but Hempfield outscored the visitors, 16-10, in the fourth. The Spartans had an 11-7 lead after the first.
The Falcons’ Jalen Rogers led all scorers with 16 points and teammate Josh Maher added 11.
Hempfield’s Mike Gaffney had 13. The Spartans’ Marcus McCarthy scored 12 and teammate Jules Nicholls added 11.
Connellsville hosts Fox Chapel (7-2, 12-6) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in section play.
