Falcon skaters close season with 5-0 road win

Connellsville closed the PIHL Division 2 regular season Monday night on a winning note with a 5-0 victory at Knoch.

The Falcons (15-3-0-2) finished tied for Ringgold in third place with 32 points, but lost the tiebreaker to the Rams. Ringgold won both games in overtime.

Ringgold and Connellsville finished one point behind second-place Neshannock.

Connellsville returns to action on Tuesday, March 5, when the Falcons host Carrick in the opening round of the PIHL Division 2 playoffs at The Ice Mine at 7 p.m.

Michael McKitrick scored the lone goal of a clean first period with no penalties. Ryan Brown and Gregory Hensh assisted on the goal at 8:53.

Hensh and Brown hooked up early in the second period when Hensch converted a Brown pass into a goal at 1:58. Luke Wascak spotted the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a power play goal at 12:27. Nic Capuzzi and Alexander Gesk assisted on the goal.

Hensh again scored early when he netted the puck at 2:31 of the third period for a power play goal. Travis Sipple and Steven Ross assisted on the goal.

Brown and Hensh reversed roles late in the game when Brown took a Hensh pass for a short-handed goal at 15:04.

Play began to get chippy in the second period with eight penalties called. Four more were called in the final 17 minutes.

Connellsville’s Sebastian Skarzenski turned aside 19 shots to preserve the shutout, his fourth of the season.

The Falcons peppered Joel Cendrwoski and Lucas Hentschel with 40 shots. Cendrowski allowed two goals on 19 shots, while Henschel gave up three goals on 21 shots.
