MUFW wins women’s Division I title
Mississippi University for Women pulled into the lead with two minutes left in the first half and didn’t trail again as the Owls won the Division I title Saturday afternoon with a 69-46 victory over Maine-Fort Kent in the USCAA National Basketball Championships at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Mississippi University for Women close the season with a 20-6 record. The Bengals finish with an overall record of 23-5.
Autumn Taylor hit a jump shot with 2:04 left in the second quarter to give MUFW at 21-19 lead. The Owls closed the first half with a 23-20 lead.
The Owls maintained the momentum with a 12-0 run to start the third quarter. Ivette Trujillo snapped the nearly 10-minute scoreless string over two quarters for the Bengals with a jump shot at 2:45.
Maine-Fort Kent had shooting woes throughout the game, hitting just 8-of-39 attempts in the first half and 17-76 for the game.
MUFW entered the fourth quarter with a 38-25 lead. The offenses hit stride in the final quarter with the Owls holding a 31-21 advantage in the final 10 minutes.
Qiayon Bailey poured in a game-high 28 points for the Owls. Tenazhia Hinkson had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor finished with 13 points, and Keyahna Jones grabbed 11 rebounds and scored nine points.
Trinity Washington had a double-double for the Bengals with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Madison Fenner finished with 12 points and Micayela Hernandez added 11.
