Cal U women advance to tournament semifinals
The California University of Pa. women pulled to a 21-point lead after the first quarter Friday night and didn’t look back for an 82-71 victory over Charleston (W.Va.) in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Vulcans (25-5) advanced to Saturday’s semifinals against top-seeded, and host, Glenville State at 7:30 p.m. Glenville State entered the semifinal riding a 21-game winning streak.
Charleston closes the season with a 25-7 record.
California led 30-9 after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 51-26 at halftime.
Charleston cut into its deficit by outscoring the Vulcans in the third quarter, 20-12. Charleston whittled California’s lead to seven points (65-58) with about six minutes to play, but the Vulcans responded with an 8-5 run for a 73-63 lead.
California secured the victory by making 9-of-12 free throws in the final minute.
Bianca Jasper led the Vulcans with a career-high 20 points. Abbey Sporio scored 18 and Seairra Barrett added 17.
Charleston’s Raziyah Farrington shared game-scoring honors with 20 points. Anna Hayton (15), Brooklyn Pannell (12), and Dionna Sanders (10) were also in double figures.
