Smith blocks extra point to preserve Jackets’ 14-13 victory
Tyler Smith blocked an extra point and Waynesburg University held on for a 14-13 victory over Thiel in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play at John F. Wiley Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (1-3, 1-4) took a 14-0 lead at halftime on touchdown runs of three and two yards by Mason Schrenker and Mike Ryhal made both PATs.
The Tomcats (0-4, 0-5) cut the deficit in half on Eligah Flynn’s 38-yard interception return at 7:13 of the fourth quarter and Chris Rosales made the extra point. Teammate Trou Johnson got Thiel within one with an 86-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 2:16 remaining before Smith’s heroics.
Waynesburg’s Justin Flack gained 82 yards on 26 carries and a long of 19.
The Yellow Jackets’ Alex Stoy, an Albert Gallatin graduate, caught two passes for nine yards and teammate Howard Metzger, a Connellsville grad, pulled in two receptions for 11 yards and returned four punts for 45 yards with a long of 24. Another Falcon graduate, Howard Metzger, had one tackle for Waynesburg.
