Greg Boggs saw a positive emerge out of Frazier’s lopsided loss to undefeated Washington last week.

That upbeat vibe evolved into the Commodores’ first win of the football season Friday night, 20-13, over visiting Leechburg in a non-conference game.

“I thought our effort level and attitude was really good even against Wash High,” said the first-year Commodores coach of the 64-7 loss. “Despite what the scoreboard said, the kids played hard the whole game, no one quit. We seemed to have more energy and more effort at practice last week and took that into this game.”

Kenny Fine scored touchdowns on offense and defense in the win over the Blue Devils.

“Kenny’s one of those game-changer players,” Boggs said.

Fine rushed for 117 yards on 19 carries and gave the Commodores (1-6) a 6-0 lead with an interception return for a TD in the first quarter.

The Blue Devils (2-5) tied it in the second quarter but Shane McGavitt’s 2-yard touchdown run put Frazier ahead to stay in the third quarter.

The Commodores added a special teams safety and a 5-yard touchdown run by Fine to go up 20-6 before a late Leechburg score set the final score.

Colton Arison also had an interception in a strong defensive performance by the Commodores.

Frazier did most of its damage on the ground.

“Our offensive line did a nice job of creating holes,” Boggs said.

Noah Phillips had 44 yards rushing and quarterback Brayden Boggs added 22 yards for the Commodores.

“We’ve been playing a lot of young kids, a lot of 10th-graders right now,” Boggs said. “We had some kids quit and it’s unfortunate. The kids that are here have come together even more.”

His players finally were rewarded for their hard work on Friday night.

“We ask about giving effort and getting better each week so it was nice to see them put it together against Leechburg and get a win. Our goal is to get better every week.”

Frazier will host Brownsville this Friday in the Herald-Standard Game of the Week.
