Colonial soccer clinches first winning season in program history
Albert Gallatin boys’ soccer assured itself a winning season for the first time in program history with a 3-1 non-section victory over McKeesport on Wednesday at Colonials Stadium.
The Colonials, who were celebrating Senior Night for captain Christian Hicks, closed the season at 9-7. Albert Gallatin finished one game behind Laurel Highlands for the fourth and final playoff spot in Section 3-AAA at 5-7.
In addition to earning the most victories in program history, the Colonials scored more and allowed fewer goals than any previous season.
Albert Gallatin jumped out to an early lead when defender Cristian Steeber scored eight minutes into the match after receiving a pass from Nick Pegg.
Steeber increased the Colonials’ advantage to 2-0 after receiving a set piece from Luke Flecker with four minutes remaining in the first half. Steeber’s goal turned out to the match winner.
Hicks started at keeper in the first half and earned the victory.
The Tigers (0-12, 3-15) cut the deficit to 1 with a goal from a set piece, but Albert Gallatin freshman Kevin Thompson, who attends school at West Greene, added an insurance tally with six minutes left after receiving a pass from Bailey Holbert, beating a player to the end line and scoring on a near-post shot.
