Lady Colonials fall to TJ for third time
The WPIAL did Albert Gallatin no favors by matching it up against second-seeded Thomas Jefferson in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA volleyball playoffs on Wednesday night.
While the Lady Colonials were expecting a new challenge, instead of facing a team from their own Section 3-AAA, they were inexplicably sent into a third meeting with the first-place Lady Jaguars by the pairings committee.
The result, nor surprisingly, was similar to their two regular-season section matches with host TJ winning, 3-0, by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-12.
The WPIAL has made it a practice of not pitting section foes against each other in the first round of the playoffs in any sport, especially in a 16-team field, but that wasn’t the case with AG.
Elizabeth Murtha led the Lady Colonials with six kills, two blocks and one ace. Albert Gallatin, which was fourth in section play with an 8-6 mark, ends the season with a 10-9 overall record.
Thomas Jefferson, which went 14-0 in Section 3, advances to play Chartiers Valley in the quarterfinals on Monday with the time and site to be determined. The Colts defeated Kiski, 3-0, in the first round.
