Lady Warriors upend Mars, 3-1, in volleyball playoffs
Leah Fournier totaled 16 kills, six service aces and three blocks as Elizabeth Forward upended Mars, 3-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA girls volleyball playoffs at Shaler on Wednesday night.
The win propels the Lady Warriors into the quarterfinals against third-seeded South Fayette on Monday with the site and time to be determined.
EF, which was the 11th seed according to its placement in the brackets, took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-20, before the fifth-seeded Fighting Planets got on the board with a 25-22 win in the third set. The Lady Warriors fought off Mars in a tight fourth set with Kaitlin Fournier delivering the winning kill, her eighth of the match, to close out the victory, 26-24.
Abby Bickerton also had eight kills, and Gianna Tour and Sarah McCall added six apiece for Elizabeth Forward. Lilly Barker chipped in with two kills.
Beth Long paced Mars with 12 kills and one block.
