2019 — The Falcons scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Cameron Dodd made the lead stand to give Connellsville a 7-6 victory in Section 2-AAAAAA over visiting Norwin.
2018 — Bailey Parshall struck out 23 in Belle Vernon’s 6-2 non-section win in extra innings over Waynesburg Central. Parshall’s previous mark was 20 strikeouts. She allowed two hits, walked one and both Waynesburg runs were unearned. The Lady Leopards’ Natalie French hit a two-run home run, while Mekenzie Sokol and Alex Sokol hit solo shots.
2017 — Mia Burd pitched a complete game shutout to lead Connellsville over Laurel Highlands, 8-0, in Section 2-AAAAA softball action. Burd scattered six hits, struck out six and walked two.
2015 — Connellsville sophomore Madison Wiltrout was the star of the day at the 13th annual Wildcat/Lady Spartan Invitational with her record-breaking throw of 164-11 in the javelin. Wiltrout also finished sixth with a triple jump of 31-7. Connellsville’s Derek Brubacher (javelin), Trevor Salopek (long jump), and Jade Bellotti (3,200) had first-place finishes, as well.
2014 — The Brownsville girls track & field team swept a Section 6-AA meet at Charleroi The Lady Falcons defeated the host team, 98-30, and Frazier, 74-54. The Seto sisters had a strong day in the field events with Maris sweeping the jumps and Alie finishing first in the discus and second in the high jump. Teammates Whitney Ptak won the 100 and 300 intermediate hurdles. Frazier’s Cassidy Guiser finished first in the 200 and 400, and was second to Ptak in the 100.
2013 — Leighlynn Guthrie struck out 11 and hit a home run to lead the Uniontown softball team over Section 4-AAA foe Derry, 3-2. Guthrie allowed five hits.
2013 — Bailey Bennington dominated on the mound and at the plate as her West Greene squad blew past California, 12-2, in five innings in Section 2-A play. Bennington struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter, and just missed hitting for the cycle with a single, double and triple with four RBI.
2012 — Paige Moninger set the career strikeout record in West Greene’s 12-1 Section 2-A victory at Beth-Center. Moninger struck out six to run her total to 340, cracking the mark of 336 set by 2009 graduate Rachel Burns.
2012 — Brownsville’s Miranda Arison threw her second career no-hitter and the Lady Falcons pounded out 10 hits for a five-inning, 12-0 Section 2-AA victory at Washington. Arison (5-2) struck out five and walked two, and legged out a triple.
2011 — Sean Hopkins, of Port Washington, N.Y., and Roberta Groner, of Irwin, won the 3.5-mile run at the 29th annual Mount Summit Challenge. Leanne Kurpiel, of Connellsville, was the overall first-place finisher in the walk. Kim Bennett, of Berlin, was the first male walker to cross the finish line.
2009 — The California University of Pa. women’s tennis team ran its winning streak to eighth matches with a 9-0 victory over the University of Charleston (W.Va.).
2008 — Beth-Center’s Geri Whitman tossed her second-straight no-hitter to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 10-0 Section 2-AA victory over visiting Charleroi. Whitman allowed only one baserunner in the five inning victory, a hit batter with one out in the fifth inning. She also went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
2007 — The West Greene softball team held off a late rally by Jefferson-Morgan for a 12-10 victory in Section 2-A. The Lady Rockets scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Lady Pioneers’ Chelsey Jones was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Sarah Burns and Katie Horr both drove in three runs with a double and single. Winning pitcher Rachel Burns had two hits and two RBI. The Lady Rockets’ Erin Barbetta went 3-for-5 with a double and teammate Emily Cottle singled, tripled and drove in three runs. Sarah Olson and Heather Herbert both had two RBI.
2006 — Geibel Catholic’s Beth Novotny ripped a solo home run in the fourth inning en route to an easy 10-0 victory over California in Section 1-A action. Novotny added two singles, joining teammate Sabrina Szabo for a three-hit game. Winning pitcher Carrie Gessner struck out five.
2005 — Khalil Greene’s two-out throwing error in the fourth inning led to four unearned runs, and that was the difference as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Diego Padres, 6-3, to split a four-game series. Dave Williams won his season debut, and Jose Mesa — the seventh Pittsburgh pitcher — worked the ninth for his second save.
2003 — The Laurel Highlands boys track & field team was solid throughout the lineup for a 122-28 Section 2-AAA victory over visiting Albert Gallatin. Belle Vernon football coach Matt Humbert won the 110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles and edged teammate Tony Patitucci to win the javelin for the Mustangs. Rob Sloan, Dan Garbutt and Brandon Mahoney, along with all three relays, had first-place finishes for Laurel Highlands. Vaughn Jones (long jump, triple jump) and Patrick Reagan (1,600, 800) finished first for the Colonials.
2002 — Saint Vincent College junior co-captain Erica Hogan was recognized on the All-American Mideast Conference honorable mention team. The Geibel Catholic graduate scored 373 points for the Lady Bearcats for an average of 12.9 points per game.
