Raiders drop finale at Chartiers-Houston, 27-14
Darnell Johnson ran for a touchdown and threw for a score but it wasn’t enough as Waynesburg Central dropped its season finale at Chartiers-Houston, 27-14, in a Century Conference game last Friday night.
Johnson’s TD pass went to Trent Stephenson and Johnson ran for the 2-point conversion for the Raiders (0-6, 0-7).
Jimmy Sadler ran for 284 yards and four touchdowns on just 17 carries for the Bucs (3-3, 3-4).
Girls volleyball
Beth-Center 3, Waynesburg Central 2 — The Waynesburg Central volleyball team tied the match at 2-2, but Beth-Center came through with a 15-7 win in the fifth set Friday afternoon for a Section 3-AA home victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Lady Raiders had already wrapped up the section title. The Lady Bulldos did not qualify for the postseason.
Waynesburg (11-1, 11-2) won the first set, and Beth-Center stormed back to take the next two, 25-20 and 25-18.
The Lady Raiders won the fourth set, 25-11, to tie the match.
Noelle Hunter finished with 17 kills and two aces for the Lady Bulldogs (4-8, 4-8). Jen Zelenick had 18 digs and 8 kills. Zoey Sussan led the way with 32 assists adding three aces. Alyssa Minerd had 14 digs, and Anna Sloan added five kills and two aces.
Thursday, Oct. 22
Mapletown 3, Bentworth 0 — The Lady Maples closed the regular season with a non-section road victory over the Lady Bearcats.
Mapletown (7-5, 8-5) had already qualified for the WPIAL Class A volleyball playoffs.
The Lady Maples swept to the win by the scores, 25-15, 25-16, 25-16.
Macee Cree (24 assists, 3 aces, 7 digs), Krista Wilson (12 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces), Taylor Dusenberry (8 kills, 7 digs), and Riley Pekar (12 digs) all had solid performances for Mapletown.
West Greene 3, Jefferson-Morgan 2 — The playoff-bound Lady Pioneers had the final, little run to secure a Section 2-A road victory over the Lady Rockets.
West Greene won the first two sets, 25-16, 25-15, but the home team stormed back to tie the match with 25-21 and 25-22 wins.
The Lady Rockets then had a late run for a 15-12 victory in the final set.
Madison Wright had a double-double for Jefferson-Morgan with 18 digs and 12 kills, as did Abby Ankrom with 21 service points and 14 digs. Maddie Call had a solid defensive effort with 15 digs. Anna Uveges (3 blocks, 8 kills), Savannah Kramer (6 kills), and Nevaeh Dudas (7 assists) also contributed for the Lady Rockets.
Wednesday, Oct. 21
Boys soccer
Waynesburg seeded 10th — Waynesburg Central was given the No. 10 seed in Class 2-A when the WPIAL released its boys soccer pairings on Oct. 21.
The Raiders (9-4, third in Section 3) were scheduled to play at No. 7 South Park on Monday.
Tuesday, Oct. 20
Girls volleyball
Carmichaels 3, Frazier 2 — Carmichaels kept the door open for at least a share of the Section 3-AA volleyball section title with a hard-fought victory over visiting Frazier.
The Lady Mikes won the opening two sets, 25-19, 25-20, but the Lady Commodores fought back two win the next two sets, 25-18, 25-15. Carmichaels won the fifth set 15-7.
Carmichaels improves to 10-1 in the section and plays section-leading Waynesburg Central (10-0) on Thursday. The Lady Raiders then close the section Friday with a match against Beth-Center.
Frazier goes to 7-4 in the section and 8-5 overall, and closes the season Thursday at home against Southmoreland.
Jensyn Hartman was strong at the net for the Lady Commodores with 22 kills and four blocks. Jordan Brundidge had double-double with 14 digs and 13 service points, as did Alexis Lovis with 24 assists and 11 service points. Kaelyn Shaporka finished with six kills and Braylin Salisbury had four blocks.
Alexandra McGee (14 assists, 14 service points) and Nicole Ludrosky (14 kills, 14 digs) both had a double-double performance for Carmichaels. Emma Holeran finished with 22 assists. Emma Hyatt (13 kills), Alizah Roberts (13 service points), and Sydney Kuis (22 digs) also had strong efforts for the Lady Mikes.
Mapletown 3, Avella 0 — The Lady Maples won by the same score in each set for a 3-0 Section 2-A victory at Avella.
Mapletown won all three sets, 25-15, to close the section schedule with a 7-5 record.
Ella Menear finished with 10 kills and eight digs for the Lady Maples. Krista Wilson had 10 kills and Riley Pekar finished with eight digs. Macee Cree added 17 assists.
Fort Cherry 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — The Lady Rangers rolled to a Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Rockets.
Fort Cherry won by the scores, 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.
Abby Ankrom (16 digs), Finley Kramer (11 digs), and Maddie Call (9 digs) played solid defense for Jefferson-Morgan (4-7). Anna Uveges finished with six kills and three blocks, and Neveah Dudas had seven assists.
