Rohanna’s 22 leads Lady Raiders to 57-27 win

Kaley Rohanna nearly outscored McGuffey by herself Monday night, finishing with a game-high 22 points in Waynesburg Central’s 57-27 home victory in Section 2-AAA action.

The win keeps the Lady Raiders (9-1, 13-3) on track to win outright or tie South Park for the section championship. McGuffey slides to 3-8 in the section and 8-12 overall.

The Lady Raiders led 36-23 at halftime, then pulled away with a 17-0 advantage in the third quarter.

Nina Sarra finished with 17 points and Clara Paige Miller added 10 for Waynesburg.

Taylor Schumacher scored eight points for McGuffey.

South Park 73, Bentworth 11 — The Lady Eagles scored 27 points in the first quarter to roll to a Section 2-AAA victory over the visiting Lady Bearcats.

South Park (10-1, 15-3) led 27-3 after the first quarter and 44-5 at halftime.

Laura Vittone scored five points for Bentworth (2-9, 6-13).

Maddie Graham led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 19 points. Maya Wertelet added 18.

Charleroi 64, Brownsville 30 — The Lady Falcons’ Emma Seto scored a game-high 22 points, but the host Lady Cougars came away with the victory to jump over Brownsville into third place in Section 2-AAA.

Charleroi (7-4, 13-8) led 22-6, 39-14 and 54-23 at the quarter breaks.

McKenna DeUnger paced the Lady Cougars with 19 points. Riley Jones scored 14 and Ella Sypolt added 10.

Brownsville goes to 6-4 in the section and 8-9 overall. Both teams have already secured a playoff berth.

Trinity 90, Albert Gallatin 62 — The Lady Hillers scored over 20 points in each quarter on their way to a Section 3-AAAAA victory over the visiting Lady Colonials.

Trinity (11-0, 16-1) clinched sole possession of the section crown with the win. Albert Gallatin (8-3, 13-4) remains in second place.

Trinity led 24-18, 45-30 and 66-42 at the quarter breaks.

Gianna Michaux paced the Lady Colonials with 22 points. Courtlyn Turner scored 18 points, Grayce Panos finished with 11, and Mya Glisan added 10.

Trinity’s Alyssa Clutter scored a game-high 23 points. Eden Williamson (15), Macie Justice (13), and Madeline Roberts (12) also scored in double figures.

West Mifflin 62, Belle Vernon 54 — The Lady Titans upended the visiting Lady Leopards for a Section 3-AAAA victory, knocking Belle Vernon out of the race for first place.

The Lady Leopards (8-3, 15-5) fall into third place while the win secures a playoff spot for fourth-place West Mifflin.

Belle Vernon led 20-18 at halftime, but West Mifflin (5-6, 6-15) rallied for a 37-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Titans closed out the victory with a 25-18 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Jenna Dawson led Belle Vernon with 19 points. Viva Kreis scored 15 and Presleigh Colditz added 11.

Emily Beck paced West Mifflin with a game-high 20 points. Shannon Conley and Savaughn Wimbs both scored 12.

Southmoreland 51, Mount Pleasant 25 — Delaynie Morvosh, Gracie Spadaro and Olivia Cernuto combined for 44 points as the Lady Scots clinched a least a share of the Section 3-AAAA title with a victory at Mount Pleasant.

It’s the third straight year Southmoreland (10-1, 16-3) has finished in first place in the section.

Morvosh finished with a game-high 17 points. Spadaro scored 14 and Cernuto added 13.

Southmoreland led 10-9 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 20-13 at halftime. The advantage grew to 33-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Tiffany Zelmore scored 13 points for the Lady Vikings (1-8, 6-12).

Serra Catholic 72, California 35 — The Lady Eagles pulled away with 38 points in the second quarter for a section 2-AA victory over the visiting Lady Trojans.

Kendelle Weston led California (5-4, 10-9) with 17 points.

Chloe Pordash (21), Brianna Battles (11), Cate Clarke (10), and Rylee Allebach (10) all scored double figures for Serra Catholic (8-0, 16-1).

Seton-La Salle 48, Beth-Center 13 — The Lady Bulldogs trailed 22-0 after the first quarter and were unable to recover for a Section 2-AA loss to the visiting Lady Rebels.

Callie Dorsey scored five points for Beth-Center (0-9, 2-16).

Mallory Daly led Seton-La Salle (7-1, 14-5) with a game-high 22 points. Ava Dursi added 16.

Frazier 49, Carmichaels 40 — The Lady Commodores scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a key Section 2-AA victory over the visiting Lady Mikes.

Frazier moves a game above Carmichaels into fourth place in the section standings. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs.

Carmichaels (2-6, 5-11) led 22-17 at halftime and 34-27 after three quarters.

Eliza Newcomer and Delaney Warnick both scored 15 points for Frazier (3-5, 6-12).

Carmichaels’ Ashton Batis finished with a game-high 16 points.

Avella 57, Geibel Catholic 24 — The visiting Lady Eagles scored 20 points in the first quarter for a Section 2-A win over the Lady Gators.

Alex Caldwell and Gianna Holonich both scored six points for Geibel (0-8, 2-16).

Katie Dryer led Avella (5-3, 10-8) with a game-high 15 points.

Monessen 52, Mapletown 30 — Mercedes Majors scored 20 points to lead the second-place Lady Greyhounds to a Section 2-A road victory at Mapletown.

Monessen (6-2, 13-4) led 17-8 after the first quarter and 27-16 at halftime.

Hailey Johnson added 10 points for Monessen.

Taylor Dusenberry led the fourth-place Lady Maples (4-4, 9-8) with 12 points.

Both teams have qualified for the postseason.

Calvary Chapel Christian 56, Neighborhood Academy 36 — Calvary Chapel Christian closed with a 20-9 advantage in the fourth quarter for road victory.

Emma Shashura poured in a game-high 33 points for Calvary Chapel Christian. Hannah Cramer added 15.

Jocelyn Hargrove led Neighborhood Academy with 17 points. Madison Davis finished with 13.

Elizabeth Forward 72, Woodland Hills 66 — Bailie Brinson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Lady Warriors over the Lady Wolverines in a non-section clash.

Elizabeth Forward (15-4) led 20-15, 32-19 and 54-39 at the quarter breaks.

Haven Briggs and Brooke Markland added 15 points apiece for Elizabeth Forward.

London Creach had 19 points for Woodland Hills (8-9) which also got 15 points from Jasmyn Fisher, 12 points from Jazmine Dunn and 11 points from Kayla Walter.

Boys basketball

Uniontown 73, South Park 37 — The Red Raiders had four players in double figures for a Section 3-AAAA victory over the visiting Eagles.

Calvin Winfrey III scored a game-high 20 points for Uniontown, who improves to 8-2 in the section and 11-7 overall. Bakari Wallace finished with 16 points, Notorious Grooms scored 15 and Tanner Uphold added 10.

Harper Conroy paced South Park (1-9, 2-14) with 12 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 60, Frazier 41 — Tajhere Jacobs, Colt Fowler and Troy Wright combined for 47 points to lead the Rockets to a Section 4-AA victory over the visiting Commodores.

Jacobs led Jefferson-Morgan (5-3, 9-6) with a game-high 23 points. Fowler scored 14 and Wright added 10.

The Rockets pulled away in the middle two quarters with a 34-17 advantage.

Brennan Stewart scored 11 points for Frazier (0-8, 0-18).

Mapletown 62, Avella 58 — Cohen Stout scored 22 points and Landan Stevenson added 15 as the Maples clinched a playoff spot with a Section 2-A win over the visiting Eagles in overtime.

Braden McIntire, who had 12 points, converted a three-point play with 2:44 left in OT put Mapletown (4-4, 9-7) ahead to stay. Stevenson made two free throws with seven seconds left and Roger Gradek did the same with four seconds left to seal it for the Maples.

Brandon Samol tallied a game-high 25 points for Avella (1-7, 2-18) and K.J. Rush had 17, including a basket with 39 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 52-52 and force the extra frame. Colton Burchianti added eight points.

The Maples had a chance to win it in regulation but Burchianti blocked a layup attempt by Stevenson with three seconds left.

Washington 56, Waynesburg Central 50 — The Prexies survived a valiant effort by the host Raiders to clinch at least a share of the Section 4-AAA title.

Davoun Fuse led Washington (10-0, 13-1) with 15 points, Tayshawn Levy had 13 and Brandon Patterson chipped in with 11.

Waynesburg (4-6, 8-10), which remains in fourth place, was up 16-11 after the first quarter but the Prexies surged in front and led 28-25 at halftime and 44-35 after three quarters. The Raiders held a 15-12 edge in the fourth but it wasn’t enough.

Hudson Pincavitch and Jacob Mason scored 11 points apiece to lead Waynesburg.

McGuffey 70, Charleroi 54 — The Highlanders kept their playoff hopes alive with a Section 4-AAA win over the visiting Cougars.

Ethan Janovich led all scorers with 23 points for McGuffey (3-7, 8-10).

Charleroi (3-6, 11-7), which has lost three straight and sits in fifth place, was paced by Will Wagner’s 21 points.

Yough 52, Indiana 27 — The Cougars cruised to a non-section victory at home after building a 40-12 halftime lead.

Terek Crosby scored a game-high 25 points for Yough (10-9). Christian Park added 14.

Ethan Kurz led Indiana (3-15) with 13 points.

Chartiers-Houston 52, Bentworth 44 — The Bucs used a big third quarter to defeat the host Bearcats in a non-section game.

Bentworth (5-13) led 12-9 after the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime but Chartiers-Houston (8-11) out-scored the home team 17-8 in the third to go up 36-32 and pulled away in the fourth.

Lucas Myers and Nate Gregory led the Bucs with 14 and 10 points.

Landon Urcho tossed in a game-high 18 points for the Bearcats who also got 11 points from Colton Lusk.

Women’s basketball

Shepherd (W.Va.) 76, California (Pa.) 66 — The Vulcans’ Dejah Terrell scored 30 points, her third 30-point game of the season, but it wasn’t enough in a PSAC Crossover play road loss to the Rams.

California now has an overall record of 14-4. Shepherd improves to 18-4.

Terrell also had eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 40 minutes of action.

Ciaira Loyd scored 17 points, dished out eight assists and had four steals for California.

Abby Beeman led the Rams with 25 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds.

Men’s basketball

California (Pa.) 64, Shepherd (W.Va.) 61 — The Vulcans scored seven points in the final 1½ minutes to secure a PSAC Crossover road victory at Shepherd.

California improves to 15-5 overall. Shepherd slips to 9-12.

Brent Pegram led the way for the Vulcans with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Pegram moved to 11th on the all-time scoring list with 1,423 points.

Teammate Philip Alston had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Keith Palek III (11) and Zyan Collins (10) also scored in double figures.

Shepherd took a 59-57 lead with 1:32 remaining in the game. Pegram returned the lead to the Vulcans with a 3-pointer and Alston added kept the rally going with a field goal with 35 seconds left.

Palek clinched the victory with two free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Shepherd’s Kyle Daggett scored a game-high 21 points. Cam Stephens added 14 points.

Hockey

Ringgold 15, Central Valley 0 — Kenny Cadwallader netted four goals and assisted on four more to lead the Rams to a PIHL D2 victory over the visiting Raiders.

Ringgold (10-4-0-0-0) moved back into first place in the South Division with 20 points. Central Valley slides to 0-14-0-0-0.

Ethan Saylor and Hunter Hodgson both finished with hat tricks for Ringgold. Trent Hawk scored twice, and Kobie Kirich, Matthew Sylvester and Braden Pringle all had one goal.

The Rams’ Jerry Mease stopped all eight shots he faced.

Neshannock 5, Elizabeth Forward 3 — The Lancers entered the third period with a two-goal lead and made the advantage stand for a PIHL D2 victory.

Neshannock improves to 9-4-0-2-0, while the Warriors go to 7-5-0-2-0.

Neshannock ran its lead to 5-0 midway through the third period.

The Warriors’ Ben Ruskay scored a power play goal and Zach Motil found the net in the final minute of the game.

Elizabeth Forward’s Gabe Myers made 35 saves in the loss. Neshannock’s Riley Mastowski turned aside 27 shots.

Girls swimming

Laurel Highlands 97, Uniontown 47 — The Fillies celebrated Senior Night with a non-section victory against visiting Uniontown.

Elizabeth Thomas, Ella Ciez, Skyler Wilson and Cecilia Mrosko opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in provisional qualifying time of 2:00.31. Sarah VanVerth, Abby Mahoney, Riley Tolbert and Hanna Lucente finished first in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:00.38.

Tolbert (200 freestyle, 2:32.28), Ciez (200 IM, 2:14.65, automatic qualifying time; 100 breaststroke, 1:09.66, automatic qualifying time), Mrosko (50 freestyle, 28.09; 500 freestyle, 5:44.72, provisional qualifying time), Scarlett Zehala (diving, 122.35), Thomas (100 butterfly, 1:09.26; 100 backstroke, 1:02.56, provisional qualifying time), and Wilson (100 freestyle, 1:04.58) all had individual first-place finishes for Laurel Highlands.

Mrosko, Thomas, Wilson and Ciez had a provisional qualifying time in exhibition in the 400 freestyle relay.

Uniontown’s Zaya McCune, Shelby Tressler, Haylee Syner and Kyleigh Kelley won the 400 freestyle relay in 5:23.71. The Lady Raiders’ Madelyn King finished the 200 IM in a provisional qualifying time of 2:24.94.

Mapletown’s Ella Menear had the fastest time in the 200 IM, touching the wall in with an automatic qualifying time of 2:09.53.

Boys swimming

Laurel Highlands 97, Uniontown 66 — The Mustangs were strong throughout the lineup for a non-section home victory against the Red Raiders.

Both teams had WPIAL Class AA automatic and provisional qualifying times.

Laurel Highlands’ Ian Hamilton, Kole Friel, CJ Soltis and Dean Schiffbauer opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay in an automatic qualifying time of 1:41.66. Schiffbauer, Hamilton, Soltis and Friel won the 400 freestyle relay in a provisional qualifying time of 3:30.23.

Hamilton (200 freestyle, 1:53.80, automatic qualifying time; 100 freestyle, 50.44, automatic qualifying time), Friel (200 IM, 2:02.98, automatic qualifying time; 100 breaststroke, 1:04.89, automatic qualifying time), Dean Schiffbauer (50 freestyle, 23.17, provisional qualifying time), Collin McManis (diving, 194.05, automatic qualifying points), Connor Locke (500 freestyle, 5:43.29), and Soltis (100 backstroke, 1:04.98) all had individual first-place finishes for Laurel Highlands.

Locke also had a provisional time in the 200 freestyle, as did Dean Schiffbauer in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle. Soltis secured an automatic qualifying time in the 100 butterfly.

Uniontown’s Dalton Grimes, Parker King, Jacob Schiffbauer and Logan Voytish won the 200 freestyle with a provisional qualifying time of 1:39.22.

Voytish had an automatic qualifying time (55.19) in the 100 butterfly and a provisional time in the 200 IM. Voytish, Jacob Schiffbauer, Grimes and Parker King had a provisional qualifying time in the 400 freestyle relay.

Grimes finished the 200 freestyle in a provisional qualifying time. Jacob Schiffbauer had a provisional qualify time in the 100 breaststroke.
