Colarusso’s late foul shots lift Mikes to 65-62 win
Dom Colarusso made four three throws in the final minute to rally Carmichaels to a 65-62 non-section victory Friday night at California.
Colarusso’s first two foul shots gave the Mikes (2-2) the lead, and his final two gave the visitors a cushion.
Colarusso finished with a game-high 32 points, including 15-of-22 from the foul line.
California (0-2) led 18-6 after the first quarter and 38-26 at halftime. Carmichaels rallied in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 52-51.
The Mikes outscored the Trojans in the final quarter. 14-10.
Carmichaels held a 20-9 advantage in foul shots made.
Jaquese Derns led California with 20 points. Vinny Manzella and Jacob Ziolecki both scored 13 points.
Steve Luko filled in on the bench for California with head coach Cabe Powell serving a suspension.
Deer Lakes 53, Yough 32 – The Lancers built a 28-15 halftime lead and then cruised to a 53-32 non-section road victory to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season.
Terek Crosby (20) and Austin Matthews (12) combined to score all of the points for Yough (3-1).
Bill Schaeffer paced Deer Lakes (3-2) with 19 points. J.T. McCue (13) and Wayne Love (10) also scored in double figures.
Clairton 74, Brownsville 46 – The Bears outscored the Falcons in the first quarter, 18-6, and rolled from there for a non-section home victory.
Clairton (1-1) led 33-19 at halftime and 57-40 after three quarters.
Trent Wible led Brownsville (1-2) with 15 points. Harlan Davis added 14 points.
Clairton’s Andre Hines scored a game-high 25 points. Taris Wooding finished with 11 points and Qua’jon Miller added 10.
Jefferson-Morgan 63, Waynesburg Central 53 – The Rockets led by four points at halftime and made the advantage stand for a non-section home win.
Dayten Marion led the way for Jefferson-Morgan (3-1) with a game-high 21 points. Houston Guseman scored 20 points and John Woodward added 10.
Alex Eck scored 16 points and Alex Vansickle added 10 for the Raiders (1-3).
Avella 57, Bentworth 53 – The Eagles held off a late rally for a non-section win over visiting Bentworth.
Cain Allen made two free throws late in the fourth quarter to give Avella a 56-53 lead.
After Bentworth’s Ben Hays missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer, the Eagles’ Cody Day sank one of two from the line with 4 seconds left to seal it.
Bentworth’s Lucas Burt recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Hays scored 12 points.
Westley Burchianti led the Eagles with 17 points. Allen added 14 points.
“I thought it was a great game,” Bearcats coach Bob Kennedy said. “We tried to spread the floor but we missed some shots we should’ve made. It’s that simple.”
Avella trailed 29-25 at halftime, but surged ahead in the third quarter and led by as much as 10 before settling on a 45-37 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Bentworth outscored the home team in the final eight minutes, 16-12.
“They’re young,” Kennedy said of his squad. “They’re in the learning phase of the game. They’re going to get better as time goes on. You see things during the course of the game and sometimes I’ve got to call a timeout and explain it to them because they don’t have the experience.
“I’m very pleased with them, though. They played hard the entire game. They’re going to be a good team.”
Uniontown 74, Thomas Jefferson 70 – The Red Raiders led at halftime, 42-32, but had to fend off the visiting Jaguars in the final 16 minutes for a non-section victory.
Notorious Grooms scored a game-high 25 points for Uniontown. Jamire Braxton (23) and Calvin Winfrey (12) combined to score 35 points.
Evan Berger led Thomas Jefferson with 24 points. Noah Prosser finished with 15 points and Nick Trlja added 11.
Girls basketball
Greensburg Salem 55, Connellsville 18 – The Lady Falcons had a rough road trip to Westmoreland County, returning home with a non-section loss.
The Lady Lions (2-1) led 16-3, 34-8 and 46-13 at the quarter breaks.
Elizabeth Panter scored five points for Connellsville (2-2).
Kait Mankins led Greensburg Salem with a game-high 16 points. Ashlan Price finished with 13 points.
West Greene 35, Bentworth 32 – The Lady Bearcats were unable to hold a halftime lead in a non-section loss to the visiting Lady Pioneers.
Bentworth (1-3) led 18-12 at halftime and 26-21 after three quarters, but West Greene rallied in the fourth quarter with a 14-6 advantage to return home with the victory.
Kendra Tharp led West Greene (1-3) with a game-high 18 points. Bentworth’s Bella Moyer scored 11 points.
Geibel Catholic 42, Derry 39 – Emma Larkin tied the game with 40 seconds remaining and scored the game-winning layup with 11 seconds to go as the Lady Gators rallied for a non-section home win.
Derry (2-3) led 23-18 at halftime.
Larkin (30) and Ava Henderson (12) combined to score all of the points for Geibel (3-1).
Jane Huss scored 18 points for the Lady Trojans.
