Malkowiak wins first with Vikings’ 50-36 home victory
Mount Pleasant handed coach Annie Malkowiak her first win of the season with the Vikings Tuesday night with a 50-36 Section 4-AAA home victory over visiting McGuffey.
Mount Pleasant improves to 1-5 overall with the section-opening win. The Highlanders go to 0-2 in the section and 1-5 overall.
The Vikings led 20-10, 31-19 and 41-30 at the quarter breaks.
Chase McCloy scored a game-high 14 points for Mount Pleasant. Teammate Dante Giallonardo added 12 points.
Ayden Cunningham finished with 12 points and Grayson Wallace added 10 for McGuffey.
Brownsville 63, Waynesburg Central 50 – The Falcons built an 8-point lead after the first quarter and kept rolling for a Section 4-AAA home win over the Raiders.
Brownsville led 33-21 at halftime and 50-35 after three quarters.
Trenton Wible paced the Falcons with a game-high 19 points. Harlan Davis scored 16 points and Jeremy Praster added 10.
Dane Woods led the Raiders with 18 points. Alex Eck had a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 points. Jackson Dean added 12 points.
Burgettstown 67, Carmichaels 43 – The Mikes fell behind early and weren’t able to rally for a Section 4-AA home loss to the Blue Devils.
Carmichaels (0-1, 3-4) trailed 15-9 after the first quarter and 28-18 at halftime.
Aydan Adamson led the Mikes with a game-high 21 points.
James Leuice was the high scorer for Burgettstown (2-0, 6-0) with 19 points. Zack Schrockman (17) and Carson Tkalcevic (14) also scored in double figures.
Fort Cherry 80, Bentworth 46 – The Rangers led 52-22 at halftime for a Section 4-AA victory over the visiting Bearcats.
Ben Hays scored a game-high 24 points for Bentworth (0-2, 1-5).
Shane Cornali finished with 22 points for Fort Cherry. Derek Errett scored 19 and Evan Pond added 11.
Belle Vernon 65, McKeesport 55 – The Leopards finished strong for a non-section road victory over the Tigers.
Belle Vernon (3-1) led 33-26 at halftime, but McKeesport sliced into the lead and trailed 46-42 after three quarters.
Zion Moore led the way for the Leopards with a game-high 29 points, including four 3-pointers, and six assists. Alonzo Wade finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.Tommy Davis added 10 points. Trevor Kovatch had six assists and seven steals.
Lamont Perkins scored 21 points for the Tigers (1-3). Brian Jones finished with 11 points.
Propel Braddock Hills 44, West Greene 38 – The Pioneers’ second half rally fell short for a non-section road loss.
West Greene (3-3) trailed 26-16 at halftime and held a 22-18 advantage in the second half.
Patrick Durbin scored 10 points for the Pioneers. Micah Kirkland finished with a game-high 14 points for Propel Braddock Hills (3-3).
Southmoreland 60, East Allegheny 35 – The Scotties remained undefeated with a non-section win at East Allegheny.
Southmoreland (6-0) led 12-10, 31-18 and 45-27 at the quarter breaks.
Ty Keffer scored 23 points and Noah Felentzer added 19 for the Scotties. The Wildcats slip to 2-4 overall.
Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) 76, Mapletown 34 – Clay-Battelle led 28-6 after the first quarter and 62-21 at halftime for a non-section road victory.
Braden McIntire scored nine points for the Maples. Preston Luzader finished with a game-high 27 points and Colby Barr added 18 for Clay-Battelle.
Ringgold 47, Greensburg Salem 46 – The Rams’ fourth-quarter rally was capped with Szyair Dungee’s putback as time expired for a non-section home victory.
Ringgold trailed by nine points in the fourth quarter before mounting the comeback.
The Golden Lions led 9-8 after the first quarter and 22-20 at halftime.
Daryl Tolliver (12) and Brayden Lomax (10) scored in double digits for the Rams.
Braden Leatherman scored a game-high 14 points for Greensburg Salem. Ryan Burkhart and A.J. Tarpley both finished with 10 points.

West Mifflin 62, Connellsville 38 – The Titans pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure the non-section victory over the visiting Falcons.
West Mifflin outscored Connellsville in the final eight minutes, 22-9.
Jayden Mickens led the Falcons with 11 points.
Aaron Smith (17), Jose Perez (12), Dave Fleming (10), and Braeden Walker (10) all scored in double figures for the Titans.
Aquinas Academy 73, Geibel Catholic 56 — Jake Guillen scored 16 points to lead Aquinas Academy to a non-section home win.
San Duer finished with 14 points and Jonah Burchill added 12 for Aquinas Academy (5-1).
Tommy Kolencik paced the Gators (0-7) with a game-high 18 points. Mike finished with 12 points.
Elizabeth Forward 70, Bethel Park 51 — A trio of Warriors finished in double figures in a non-section victory over the Black Hawks.
Isaiah Turner scored 16 points, Cy Herchelroath finished with 12 and Krystian Kennedy added 11 for Elizabeth Forward (5-1).
Michael Mathias and Nick Brown scored 10 points apiece for Bethel Park (2-4).
Thomas Jefferson 85, Laurel Highlands 58 — Evan Berger and Noah Prosser shared team-scoring honors with 23 points each to lead the Jaguars to a non-section win.
Joey Mendyk added 14 points for Thomas Jefferson (6-2).
Aiden Black scored a game-high 27 points for Laurel Highlands (2-4). Luke Martin finished with 13 points.
Uniontown 85, Dayton (Ky.) 50 – The Red Raiders opened play in Florida with a convincing win over the Greendevils.
Uniontown led 26-6, 47-23 and 63-37 at the quarter breaks.
Jamire Braxton led four Red Raiders in double figures with a game-high 20 points. Notorious Grooms (14), Calvin Winfrey (12), and Jeremiah Hager (11) also finished in double digits.
Kevin Buemi led Dayton with 19 points. Chad Nickel scored 14 points and Eric Solano added 13.

Oakland Catholic 76, Connellsville 16 – Oakland Catholic led 51-9 at halftime to roll to a Section 3-AAAAA victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.
Whitney Bobish scored six points and Elizabeth Painter had four points for the Lady Falcons (0-2, 2-5).
London Creach (16), Josie Fontana (13), Kaylee DeAngelo (11), and Raygen Hintemeyer (10) all finished in double digits for Oakland Catholic.
California 57, Jefferson-Morgan 17 – Rakiyah Porter outscored the Lady Rockets by herself to lead the Lady Trojans to a non-section home win.
Porter scored 28 points for California (4-4). Brookann Maddich finished with seven points for Jefferson-Morgan (2-6).
Brownsville 61, Uniontown 55 – The Lady Falcons survived early foul trouble for a non-section home victory.
The Lady Raiders led 13-10 after the first quarter, but Brownsville rallied for a 27-25 halftime lead. The Lady Falcons (7-2) held a slim 48-45 lead after three quarters.
Skyler Gates had a double-double for Brownsville with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Zhariah Reed scored 16 points despite missing most of the first quarter with foul trouble. Ava Clark, who sat most of the first half in foul trouble, scored 15 points.
Uniontown’s A’Kira Dade shared game-scoring honors with 26 points. Geeleece Ingram finished with 14 points and Haley Abbott added 11.
Bentworth 53, Avella 43 – The Lady Bearcats pulled away in the third quarter and held off a late rally for a non-section home victory.
Bentworth (2-6) led 28-26 at halftime and extended the advantage to 44-30 after three quarters.
Amber Sallee scored 18 points, including 8-for-8 from the foul line, for the Lady Bearcats. Kayla O’Dell had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Aubrie Logan pulled down 14 rebounds.
Ava Frank led the Lady Eagles (1-6) with 21 points.
Ringgold 43, Carrick 31 — Kailyn Webb scored 13 pointsin the Lady Rams’ non-section victory.
Ringgold improve to 2-5 overall, while Carrick slips to 2-3.
Rifle
Penn-Trafford 797-54x, Waynesburg 784-40x – The Raiders dropped a virtual match to the Warriors.
Emily Burnfied and Logan Crouse shared scoring honors for Waynesburg with 100-7x. Faithlyn Vukmanic was also on target with a score of 1004x.
Emma Lawson (99-8x), Carrigan Henry (96-3x), Joe Withrow (97-2x), Corbin Flanagan (96-5x), and Aylah Ford (96-4x) also counted in the final tally.
Penn-Trafford’s Carlee Valenta was perfect with a score of 100-10x. Nino Sunseri (100-6x), Brian Broadwater (100-9x), Ivy Thomas (100-7x), and Emily Valenta (100-8x) also scored 100.
Boys swimming
Belle Vernon 71, Greensburg Salem 53 – Gaige Watson (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Brady Malekovich (200 IM), and Tim Reda (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) all had first-place finishes for the Leopards in a non-section road victory.
Belle Vernon improves to 5-2 overall.
Belle Vernon swept the relays.
Girls swimming
Greensburg Salem 78, Belle Vernon 68 – Grace Newbould (200 freestyle), Melina Stratigos (50 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Martyna Maley (100 butterfly), Megan Shusteric (100 freestyle), and the 200 medley relay finished first for the Lady Leopards in a non-section road win.
Belle Vernon goes to 5-2 overall.
