Carroto scores 100th goal in Lady Cougars’ 2-0 win

Bella Carroto scored an unassisted goal six minutes into Thursday’s Section 2-A match for her 100th career goal, and that goal was the game-winner in Charleroi’s 2-0 victory over South Allegheny.

Carroto set up McKenna DeUnger’s goal, her 93rd career score, early in the second half.

Charleroi (10-1-0, 13-1-0) clinched the Section 2-A title with the victory. South Allegheny goes to 6-5-0 in the section and 11-6-0 overall.

Boys soccer

Belle Vernon 4, McGuffey 0 — Trevor Kovatch netted a pair of goals to lead the Leopards’ to a Section 3-AA victory.

Belle Vernon (13-1-0, 14-2-0) clinched sole possession of first place with the victory.

Kovatch spotted Belle Vernon a 1-0 lead in the first half. Kovatch, Tim Reda and Brandon Yeschenko scored in the second half.

McGuffey goes to 10-4-0 in the section and 12-5-0 overall.

Bentworth 6, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Ryan Colbert’s hat trick sparked the Bearcats to a non-section win over the Bucs.

Dillan Colbert scored two goals and Ryan Moessner netted one for Bentworth (13-2). John Scott finished with three assists and Coltyn Lusk had two in the victory.

Chartiers-Houston slides to 2-15-0.

Beth-Center 2, Ligonier Valley 1 — The Bulldogs edged the Rams for a Section 2-A victory.

The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime.

Mikey Rodriguez and Nekoda Bundy scored for Beth-Center (5-5-0, 10-6-0). Ligonier Valley falls to 1-9-0 in the section and 4-10-1 overall.

Mount Pleasant 3, Waynesburg Central 0 — Jacob McGuinness stopped both shots he faced as the Vikings shut out the Raiders for a Section 3-AA victory.

Grant Zahrobsky, Austin Ulery and Aidan Johnson all scored a goal for Mount Pleasant (12-2-0, 12-3-0).

Waynesburg finishes with a 4-10-0 section record and 5-11-0 overall.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Uniontown 1 — Ray Schrello scored four goals and Brayden Miller finished with a hat trick to lead the Jaguars to a Section 3-AAA victory.

Thomas Jefferson (14-1-1) finishes with a 12-1-1 section record. The Red Raiders finish 2-12-0 in the section and 5-13-0 overall.

Trinity 3, Laurel Highlands 1 — Three different players scored for the Hillers in a Section 3-AAA victory.

Tyler Johnson, Andy Palm and John Garcia scored for Trinity (8-5-1, 8-5-1). The Mustangs finish with a 4-10-0 section record and 6-11-0 overall mark.

Yough 5, Washington 1 — The Cougars’ Collin Barner and Isaac Pacacha both scored two goals in a Section 3-AA win over the Prexies.

Tyler Woloshun added a solo goal for Yough (8-6-0, 9-7-1). Washington goes to 5-9-0 in the section and 5-12-0 overall.

Bethel Park 4, Ringgold 1 — Jackson Friday scored a hat trick to lead Bethel Park to a Section 3-AAA victory against the Rams.

Xavier Jackson added a goal for Bethel Park (13-0-1, 15-1-1). Ringgold goes to 4-9-0 in the section and 6-10-0 overall.

Elizabeth Forward 5, South Allegheny 1 — Will Sinay finished with two goals to lead the Warriors to a Section 1-AA victory over the Gladiators.

Hugo Davila-Sanz, Evan Marasco and Aidan Davis all scored on goal for Elizabeth Forward (8-4-1, 9-5-1). South Allegheny slides to 0-14-0 in the section and 1-15-1 overall.

Greensburg Central Catholic 5, California 1 — Jackson Vacanti scored two goals, and James Brewer, Grant Brewer and Andrew McIntyre finished with one each in the Centurions’ Section 2-A victory.

Greensburg C.C. goes to 5-5-0 in the section and 7-9-0 overall. The Trojans slip to 1-9-0 in the section and 3-12-0 overall.

Girls volleyball

Belle Vernon 3, Uniontown 0 — The Leopards rolled to a Section 3-AAA victory over the Lady Raiders.

Belle Vernon won by the scores, 25-13, 25-15, 25-8.

Miah DeShields (7 kills, 4 digs), Ryleigh Jose (6 assists, 2 kills, 2 digs), Brittany Lloyd (2 kills, 8 digs), and Lauren White (4 assists, 2 digs) led the attack for Uniontown.

Ringgold 3, Albert Gallatin 1 — The Lady Colonials tied the Section 3-AAA match with a 25-22 win in the second set, but Ringgold closed out the match with wins in the third and fourth sets.

Ringgold won the first set, 25-16, and the final two sets, 25-13 and 25-20.

Albert Gallatin’s stats leaders were Jocelyn Ellsworth (2 digs, 12 assists), Amelia Bradley Rash (2 kills), Bella Bergman (7 digs), Ashley Metts (4 digs), Mikayla Shea (2 kills, 3 blocks), Mitchell Turner (2 digs, 5 kills, 4 blocks), Kymber Hlatky Houze (7 digs), Mia Myers (3 digs, 8 assists, 2 aces, 7 kills), and Leah Myers (6 digs, 8 kills).

Brownsville 3, Bentworth 1 — The Lady Falcons dropped the first set, but rallied to win the next three for a Section 3-AA victory.

The Lady Bearcats won the opening set, 25-17. Brownsville (8-6, 9-7) responded with set wins of 25-19, 25-16 and 26-24.

Mackenzie Wade (34 assists, 10 service points) and Ava Clark (14 kills, 17 digs) had a double-double for Brownsville.

Caylee Balabon (5 kills, 9 service points, 13 digs), Skyler Gates (22 kills, 7 blocks, 9 service points), Cassidee Settles (25 digs, 8 service points), and Payton Evanchak (3 kills, 8 service points, 9 digs) also had solid performances for the Lady Falcons.

Bentworth’s stats leaders were Jocelyn Babirad (13 digs, 18 assists), Sofia Gaussa (3 kills, 9 digs), Abigail Chester (7 kills, 5 digs), Chelsea Dindal (11 kills, 18 digs, 2 blocks), Sydney Gonglik (2 aces, 4 kills, 3 blocks), Haylee Wolfe (10 digs), and Zoie McDonald (6 digs).

Mapletown 3, Geibel Catholic 0 — The Lady Maples swept to a Section 2-A win at Geibel.

Mapletown won by the scores, 25-4, 25-10, 25-3.

Bailey Rafferty had 15 assists and 13 aces for the Lady Maples (8-4, 11-4). Maley Seward served 13 aces. Miranda Wise finished with six kills and four blocks.

Frazier 3, Carmichaels 1 — The Lady Mikes fought back to tie the section with a 25-23 win in the second set, but Frazier closed out the victory with back-to-back set wins.

Frazier (12-0, 14-1) won with set scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-19.

The Lady Commodores’ Maddie Salisbury had a team-high 13 kills, while Grace Vaughn had 12 kills. Gracen Hartman had a double-double with 30 assists and 13 service points, as did Molly Yauch with 23 digs and 15 service points. Allie Monack had a nice all-around performance with 23 assists and five blocks. Addison Schultz finished with three blocks.

Chloe Mitchell (17 assists, 11 digs, 15 service points), Pacey Pratt (14 kills, 10 digs. 11 service points), and Ani Cree (11 kills, 12 digs, 12 service points) all had a triple-double for Carmichaels (5-7). Bailey Barnyak finished with nine kills. Payton Plavi had 12 service points. Avery Voithofer dished out 13 assists.

Southmoreland 3, Washington 0 — The Lady Scots clinched Section 3-AA title without a loss and dropping a set with a win over Washington.

Southmoreland improves to 15-0 in the section and 17-0 overall.

Taylor Doppelheuer had seven kills. Gianna Perbonish finished with 15 service points. Riley Puckey contributed 15 assists and five kills for Southmoreland.

Hockey

Carrick 4, Ringgold 3 — Carrick rallied with three goals in the second period for a PIHL D2 Blue Division home victory.

Christian Cole’s power play goal with 3½ minutes left in the first period started Carrick’s run of four unanswered goals.

Tanner Heidkamp tied the game and gave Carrick (1-1-0-0-0) the lead with goals in the second period. Ivan Manculich increased the lead to 4-2.

Bruce Santina drew the Rams (0-2-0-0-0) to 4-3 at 2:23 of the third period, but Logan Keady was tough in the nets for Carrick with 28 saves.

Santina scored the first goal of the game and Phil Quattrone doubled the lead at 12:58 of the first period.

Ringgold’s Collin Moffett made 31 saves.

Boys cross country

Mingo Classic “Pink Out” Invitational — Ringgold’s Ryan Pajak ran away from the field on his home course for a first-place finish in the annual invitational held at Mingo Creek Park.

Pajak finished in 14:40.51.

Elizabeth Forward won the AA team title with 42 points. Patrick Burgos led the charge with his second overall finish in 15:11.78.

The Warriors’ Thomas Fine finished sixth in 16:41.76. Teammate Hunter Thomas also had a top-20 finish by placing 18th in 17:22.84. Garrett Vietmeier (17:56.67), Joseph Maksin (18:19.95), Tommy Sharkey (19:09.84), and Matthew Vietmeier (20:20.94) also had scoring runs for Elizabeth Forward.

Upper St. Clair won the AAA team title with 40 points. Eden Christian cruised to the A title with 18 points.

Girls cross country

Mingo Classic “Pink Out” Invitational — Host Ringgold edged Chartiers Valley for the AA team title in the annual meet held at Mingo Creek Park.

The Lady Rams finished with 40 points, while Chartiers Valley had 42.

Ringgold’s Lily Brenneman received individual honors after she placed 16th in 20:52.96.

Annie Daerr (21:28.59), Angelique Mariana (22:12.63), Willow Leach (22:58.59), Isabel Shvarts (23:26.57), Sarah Palmer (24:32.27), and Alexis Sarnoski (25:42.74) also had scoring runs for the Lady Rams.
