Big plays were everywhere during Week 7 of the high school football season with local teams producing 16 touchdowns of 50 or more yards.

Jake Layhue’s paths to scoring were much shorter but the 16 points the California senior produced on touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards and two 2-point conversions was enough to slightly extend his lead in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club standings.

Layhue’s total now stands at 114 points, which if 10 more than Elizabeth Forward’s Charlie Nigut who remained in second place with 104 points after touchdown runs of 47 and 42 yards.

The top three remained unchanged as West Greene’s Colin Brady, who had one of those long-distance scores with an 84-yard kickoff return, had six points and is in third place with 96 points.

All came in victories as the Trojans rolled past Carmichaels, 56-13, the Warriors romped over South Allegheny, 49-15, and the Pioneers won at Beth-Center, 37-12.

The Mikes’ Billy Wright had the longest touchdown of the week with an 85-yard kickoff return in the loss to California.

One of the most spectacular plays of the week was by Uniontown, although it came in a loss, as Cam Jackson connected with K’Adrian McLee on a halfback option touchdown pass of 58 yards.

Uniontown, which fell at Waynesburg Central last Friday, 35-6, kicks off Week 8 early with a rare Thursday night game as the Red Raiders host Petersburg at 6 p.m.

The Trojans’ Spencer Petrucci dropped one spot from fourth to fifth with 92 points despite scoring 14 with TD runs of 22 and 35 yards and a 2-point conversion against Carmichaels.

Belle Vernon’s Quinton Martin, who had 20 points in a 55-7 win at Mount Pleasant on two 25-yard touchdown runs, a 15-yard TD reception and a 2-point conversion, moved into fourth place with 94 points.

The leading scorer of the week was Jefferson-Morgan’s Deakyn Dehoet who rang up 26 points in a 46-12 victory over Monessen. Dehoet hauled in a trio of touchdown passes, scored a 2-point conversion and added a 79-yard kickoff return, his third of the season, to move into sixth place with 86 points.

Southmoreland’s Da’sjon Craggette had 18 points on touchdown runs of 4, 3 and 4 yards in a 46-12 win at Greensburg Salem to hang on to seventh place with 84 points.

Waynesburg’s Breydon Woods went on TD jaunts of 29, 71 and 18 yards in the Raiders’ win over Uniontown and now has sole possession of eighth place with 78 points.

Beth-Center’s Ethan Varesko, who had one TD run in the loss at West Greene, is ninth with 74 points.

Rounding out the top 10 is the Pioneers’ Johnny Lampe whose 22 points was the second-highest total for the week. Lampe had touchdown runs of 3, 2 and 4 yards with a pair of 2-point conversions against the Bulldogs.

Two of the 50-plus yard touchdown plays last week were scored by Belle Vernon’s Kole Doppelheuer on a 50-yard reception and 62-yard run, and two came on kickoff returns by Monessen in its loss to J-M with Tim Kershaw going 86 yards and Tyvaughn Kershaw racing 82 yards.

The others were by Belle Vernon’s Anthony Crews (82-yard run), Mount Pleasant’s Dante Giallonardo (77-yard reception), Frazier’s Chase Fulmer (67-yard run), California’s Zachary Geletei (55-yard run), Mapletown’s Brock Evans (61-yard reception), Bentworth’s Lucas Burt (59-yard reception) and Southmoreland’s Wyatt Richter (53-yard reception).
