California upends Carlynton in volleyball playoffs

California upended Carlynton in the first round of the WPIAL Class A girls volleyball playoffs, 3-1, on Tuesday night.

The Lady Trojans (11-5) won the first set, 25-18, dropped the second, 17-25, and secured the victory with set wins of 25-18 and 25-21.

California advances to play third-seeded Bishop Canevin on Thursday.

Greensburg C.C. 3, Mapletown 0 — The fourth-seeded Lady Centurions swept past the Lady Maples in the opening round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs.

Greensburg C.C. won by the scores, 25-20, 25-11, 27-25.

Mapletown (12-7) had strong performances from Isabella Garnek (5 kills), Rowan Eisiminger (4 kills), Bailey Rafferty (4 kills, 10 digs, 13 assists), Brianna Ashton (19 digs, 2 aces), and Marley Seward (4 aces).

West Greene 3, Burgettstown 0 — The Lady Pioneers advance to the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory over Burgettstown.

West Greene (14-3) swept to victory by the scores, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-8. The Lady Pioneers advance to play top-seeded Serra Catholic on Thursday.

Girls soccer

Avonworth 11, Yough 0 – The No. 1 seed received three goals from Fiona Mahan for a WPIAL Class AA first-round victory over visiting Yough.

Avonworth improves to 15-1-2 overall and plays Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The Lady Cougars finish with a 5-14-0 record.

Quaker Valley 7, Southmoreland 0 — The Lady Quakers shut out Southmoreland to return home with a WPIAL Class AA first-round victory.

Mia Strelec and Annabel Miko scored two goals apiece for Quaker Valley (11-5-1). The Lady Scots close with an overall record of 10-6-0.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1, Waynesburg Central 0 — Alexa Taylor scored the WPIAL Class A first-round playoff match’s lone goal in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s win.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart improves to 10-4-0. The Lady Raiders finish the season with a 11-6-0 record.

Hockey

Deer Lakes 5, Connellsville 0 — The Lancers’ Aaron Haney stopped all 25 shots he faced to shut out the Falcons for a PIHL D2 Division road victory at The Ice Mine.

Deer Lakes (4-1-0-0-0) led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 at the end of the second period.

Connellsville (0-4-0-0-0) went 0-for-3 on the power play. Nick Daniels-Nimick made 27 saves.
