Pirates are winning, so just enjoy the ride

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ opening week brought to mind a quote from Karate Kid II (yeah, I sense the collective eye roll).
Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) kneels bedside where his father, in failing health, is resting. His father stirs and recognizes his son, who left the village years before, saying, “If I am dreaming, let me never awaken. If I am awake, let me never sleep.”
The Pirates’ beginning of the season run is seemingly improbable, like in a dream.
They’ve won games in a myriad of ways, including blowing leads late and then finding a way to push across the winning run, rare offensive displays, and playing just good, old solid baseball.
The thing about the Pirates is the players that are supposed to be producing, are. When coupled with pleasant surprises, that increases the chance for victory.
The naysayers, though, won’t let fans with their heads in the clouds after this remarkable start, like me, enjoy the early run. Sometimes, I think it’s just so their predictions will come true.
They’re winning now. Why overthink things?
So, if the Pirates are dreaming, don’t stir them, and if they’re awake, when’s the next game!

I’ve been watching a lot of basketball, of late, and, though not quite as abrasively as Charles Barkley’s critique of Grand Canyon University in its game against Alabama, there has been a lot of dumb basketball during March Madness.
Basketball is a pretty simple game at its core, yet so many times over the past two weeks players make the contest so difficult.
Seems to me if a team is shooting a single digit percentage from 3-point range, maybe it’s time to change the approach on offense
___
Al Maguire would’ve certainly called Purdue’s Zach Edey one of his aircraft carriers. Wonder what term he would’ve coined for North Carolina State’s DJ Burns then?
Those two big men colliding in Arizona this weekend might be felt in Las Vegas.
___
With those two players in mind, here’s a rule change to ponder: I think someone needs to find a way to reward play of big men, once again. Maybe make field goals made by post players worth three points. It’s tiresome watching five players standing 20 feet away from the basket, but, then again, I’m old fashioned (or just plain old).
___
How’s your bracket holding up? I have Purdue winning it all in one of mine, so fingers crossed!
Though if Alabama rains down 3-pointers like they did in the win over Clemson (which didn’t help my bracket), the Crimson Tide will be hard to beat. Mark Sears certainly had his game going in the second half.
The way Alabama and UConn have been playing of late, the scorekeeper might need another page to keep track of all the stats.
___
Looks like not many high school baseball and softball games will be played this week. Rain is needed, but not all at one time.
___
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an intriguing offseason, so far. It will be interesting to see how it all meshes in September.
___
Warm up the coffee and hot chocolate because the predicted weather conditions for the Pirates’ home opener are better suited for a late-season Steelers game.
