Gladiators hand Red Raiders first loss of the season
South Allegheny finished strong in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to hand Uniontown its first loss of the season with a 54-44 non-section road victory.
Uniontown (14-1) was coming off a tough section victory against Southmoreland on Monday.
The Gladiators (11-5) led 15-10 after the first quarter and 29-20 at halftime.
Uniontown sliced into the deficit in the third quarter with a 16-10 advantage.
South Allegheny made sure the home team wouldn’t have one last rally by outscoring the Red Raiders in the final eight minutes, 15-8.
Jamire Braxton led Uniontown with 19 points. Notorious Grooms finished with 13 points.
South Allegheny’s Mike Michaelski scored a game-high 20 points. Jeston Beatty added 11.
The Gladiators made 12-of-19 foul shots, compared to 7-of-13 by Uniontown. South Allegheny made four 3-pointers to only one by the Red Raiders.
Brownsville 51, Waynesburg Central 31 – The Falcons led throughout the game for a Section 4-AAA home victory.
Brownsville (2-6, 7-11) led 12-7, 18-16 and 29-23 at the quarter breaks, and then pulled away with a 22-8 advantage in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons’ Trent Wible scored a game-high 24 points.Harlan Davis contributed 14 points.
Alex Vansickle scored nine points for the Raiders (1-6, 4-11).
Jefferson-Morgan 55, Avella 53 – Jefferson-Morgan 55, Avella 53 – Dayten Marion’s basket with 30 seconds remaining lifted the host Rockets to a thrilling non-section win over Avella.
Jefferson-Morgan trailed 30-23 at halftime and 49-44 midway through the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by the Eagles’ Brayden Fuller but outscored Avella 11-4 the rest of the way.
“It was a fastbreak and Dayten ran the floor, our guards got it to our bigs like we emphasize,” J-M coach Brandon Lawless said of the winning shot. “He’s an athlete and around the rim with his height he’s tough to stop.”
Bryce Wright’s potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer rattled out for Avella which fell to 8-9 overall.
“It shouldn’t have come down to that really,” said Avella coach Mike Macik. “Losing our big guy (Cain Allen, who fell ill) at halftime didn’t help us. We didn’t rebound well and that was the biggest part of the game. That’s what beat us.”
Marion led Jefferson-Morgan (11-6) with a game-high 23 points along with 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. John Woodward Jr. added 11 points and eight boards. The Rockets also got 10 rebounds from Jace Bedilion.
Rylan Bell led the Eagles with a career-high 16 points and Wright added 14 points with three 3-pointers for the Eagles. Avella also got a double-double from Westley Burchianti who scored 10 points and tied for game-high honors with 14 rebounds although the Rockets won the overall battle on the glass, 38-34, with 17 offensive boards.
Lawless praised the effort of his team which also played Monday night, winning at Geibel Catholic.
“It’s generally a lot tougher playing on the second night when you’re going back-to-back and we’re not that deep, but they played with a lot of intensity tonight, especially in the second half,” said Lawless, who also commended the Rockets’ defense.
“Defense is our bread and butter because, to be truthful, we’re below average offensively. I tell these boys all the time if you play good defense you’re giving yourself a chance to win every night no matter what you do offensively.”
Washington 68, Charleroi 34 – The Prexies led 19-3 after the first quarter and didn’t look back for a Section 4-AAA road win.
Jackson Keranko scored nine points for the Cougars (2-6, 6-11).
Braiden Wise led Washington (7-0, 10-5) with 14 points. Ruben Gordon finished with 13 points.
Burgettstown 56, Carmichaels 48 – The Mikes had a tough time on the road with a Section 4-AA loss at Burgettstown.
The Blue Devils led 19-9 after the first quarter and 28-18 at halftime.
Dom Colarusso scored 14 and Aydan Adamson added 11 for the Mikes.
Zack Schrockman paced Burgettstown with a game-high 23 points. James Leuice (12) and Carson Tkalcevic (11) also scored in double figures.
Fort Cherry 77, Bentworth 51 – The Rangers scored 47 points in the middle two quarters for a Section 4-AA road victory.
Fort Cherry (7-0, 12-4) extended its lead from 12-11 after the first quarter to 59-33 entering the fourth quarter.
Lucas Burt had a double-double for the Bearcats (2-6, 3-12) 17 points and 13 rebounds. Ben Hays scored 12 points.
Derek Errett led the way for Fort Cherry with 27 points.Shane Cornali and Blake Sweder both scored 12 points.
Chartiers-Houston 50, Beth-Center 35 – The Bucs led 30-17 at halftime for a Section 4-AA road win.
Brody Tharp scored 12 for the Bulldogs (2-5, 4-12), and Jonah Sussman and Jason Zellie both finished with nine points.
Indiana 69, Connellsville 40 – Indiana built a lead in the first quarter and kept up the pressure for a non-section road win.
Indiana (8-8) led 20-11 after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 35-17 at halftime.
Bruce Giles led the Falcons (2-14) with 10 points.
Mark Collinger (16), Evan Brocious (14), Aaron Webb (12), and Trevor Todd (10) all scored in double figures for the visitors.
Turkeyfoot Valley 73, Mapletown 61 – The Rams led 41-27 at halftime and then held off the visiting Maples for a non-section victory.
Jeremiah Mick paced Mapletown (2-12) with 24 points. Roger Gradek added 10 points.
Bryce Nicholson scored a game-high 38 points for Turkeyfoot. Zack Ryan contributed 13 points.
Carrick 72, California 42 – The Trojans were unable to build on a first-quarter lead in a non-section home loss.
Carrick led 30-26 at halftime. The visitors outscored the Trojans (4-12) in the second half, 46-29.
Jacob Ziolecki scored 12 points and Noah Neil added 11 for California.
Brayden Fisher scored a game-high 23 points for Carrick (6-9). Delenn Ward and Ray Saunders both finished with 13 points.
Norwin 55, Laurel Highlands 38 – The Mustangs held a 21-18 halftime lead, but the Knights surged in the fourth quarter to rally for a non-section road victory.
Norwin (7-8) tied the game at 30 entering the fourth quarter, and then secured the win with a 25-8 advantage in the final eight minutes.
Ethan Koffler and Aiden Black both scored 12 points for the Mustangs (2-15).
Noah Wilson led the Knights with a game-high 18. Dylan McCullough added 12.
West Mifflin 61, Ringgold 57 – The Titans outscored the Rams in the final two minutes, 12-2, to rally for a non-section road win.
Ringgold led 55-49 with two minutes left in the game.
Szyair Dungee led the Rams with 13 points. Daryl Tolliver and Aidan Angotti both finished with 12 points.
David Fleming scored a game-high 24 points for West Mifflin. Branson Battles finished with 12 points.
Peters Twp. 80, Elizabeth Forward 61 — Four players scored in double digits to lead Peters Twp. to a non-section win over the Warriors.
Jack Dunbar (21), Nick McCullough (16), Nate Miller (15), and Dylan Donovan (15) led the way for Peters Twp. (12-4).
Charlie Meehleib led Elizabeth Forward (9-6) with 20 points and Isaiah Turner added 13.
Southmoreland 72, Valley 56 — Ty Keffer poured in a game-high 43 points to lead the Scotties to a non-section victory.
Southmoreland improves to 14-3 overall.
Jake Staraniec paced the Vikings (4-10) with 25 points. Tayshawn Hawkins scored 13 and Keyziyah Clay added 11.
St. Joseph 67, Geibel Catholic 48 — Gabe Maltese and Anthony Zavolta combined for 46 points in the Spartans’ non-section home victory.
Maltese scored a game-high 24 points for St. Joseph (3-13), while Zavolta added 22. Cole Spenser finished with 10 points.
Tommy Kolencik paced the Gators (0-17) with 18 points. Mike Miller scored 14.
Men’s basketball
Penn State Mont Alto 83, Penn State Fayette 67 – The visitors outscored Fayette in the second half, 50-34, for a PSUAC road victory.
The game was tied at 33-33 at halftime.
Torian Jenkins led Fayette with 19 points. Dasilas Jones finished with 16 points.
Penn State Mont Alto’s Caleb Eckert scored a game-high 31 points. Cameron Williams added 11 points.
Women’s basketball
Penn State Mont Alto 74, Penn State Fayette 62 – Penn State Fayette’s rally in the fourth quarter came up short in a PSUAC home loss.
Fayette held a 29-18 advantage in the fourth quarter. Penn State Mont Alto led 56-33 after three quarters.
Sophia Zalar came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points for Penn State Fayette. Daelin Burnsworth finished with 15 points.
Mont Alto’s Dariana Perez had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Autumn Fischer (17), Shanez Morales (14), and Kaleigh Hartman (18) also scored in double figures.
Girls basketball
Monessen 46, Frazier 35 – The Lady Greyhounds led throughout the game for a non-section road victory.
Monessen (10-3) held quarter advantages of 15-11, 28-16 and 38-22.
The Lady Greyhounds’ Avanti Stitch scored a game-high 19 points.
Allie Yauch led the Lady Commodores (5-12) with 15 points. Chloe Harger finished with 10 points.
Laurel Highlands 52, Greensburg Salem 29 – Ayrianna Sumpter and Aierra Jenkins both finished with double-doubles to lead the Fillies to a solid non-section victory.
Sumpter scored 19 points and Jenkins finished with 18. Both players grabbed 10 rebounds.
Laurel Highlands broke open a close game in the second half with a 34-11 advantage in the final 16 minutes.
Kait Mankins led the Lady Lions (13-3) with 13 points.
West Greene 52, Hundred (W.Va.) 17 – The Lady Pioneers held the visitors to single digits in each quarter for a non-section road victory.
Kendra Tharp and Brooke Miller shared scoring honors for West Greene with eight points apiece.
Hundred’s Ashlynn Peters also scored eight points.
Southmoreland 41, Bentworth 37 – The Lady Scots’ made an early four-point lead stand for a non-section home win.
Bea Pawlikowsky scored 15 points for Southmoreland (2-14). Amber Sallee led the Lady Bearcats (4-13) with a game-high 17 points.
Rifle
Waynesburg Central 793-47x, Bethel Park 778-27x – Five Raiders scored 100 for a non-section home win at Waynesburg Sportsman’s Club.
Waynesburg’s Joe Withrow was medalist with a 100-9x. Logan Crouse (100-8x), Emma Lawson (100-5x), Wyatt Franklin (100-4x), and Corbin Flanagan (100-5x) also had perfect scores.
Abbi Kidd (99-5x), Emily Burnfield (97-5x), and Oliva Salka (97-6x) rounded out the scoring for the Raiders.
Lindsay Saffer shot a team-best 99-7x for Bethel Park.
Hockey
Connellsville 4, Ringgold 2 – Ryan Filcheck scored the game-deciding goal at 5:27 in the third period to lift the Falcons to an upset of the first-place team in the PIHL D2 Blue Division standings.
Connellsville (6-8-0-0-0) pulls into a tie for fourth place with Elizabeth Forward (6-5-0-0-0) at 12 points.
Morgantown (10-5-0-0-0) scored the first goal when Brayden Hellen found the back of the net with 13:30 remaining in the second period.
Connellsville’s Ian Zerecheck tied the game with a goal at 6:10, and Alex Boone’s goal four minutes later gave the home team the lead, 2-1.
Filcheck’s goal ran the advantage to 3-1, but Morgantown stayed close after Albert Gallatin’s Geno Valenti set up teammate John Dibartolomeo for a goal at 13:47.
The Falcons’ Elijah Pleva scored an empty net goal with 33 seconds left in the game.
Connellsville’s Nick Daniels-Nimick turned aside 31 shots in the victory.
