Leopards win key section game at Southmoreland, 85-73

Southmoreland’s fourth-quarter rally fell short Friday night in an 85-73 loss to visiting Belle Vernon in Section 3-AAAA play.

The Scotties (3-3, 14-4) held a 28-21 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Belle Vernon (4-2, 9-4) led 21-16 after the first quarter and a slim 35-34 lead at halftime. The Leopards gained some distance in the third quarter for a 64-45 lead.

Tommy Davis led the way for the Leopards with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Alonzo Wade also had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Trevor Kovatch scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Scotties’ Noah Felentzer scored a game-high 30 points. Wyatt Richter finished with 20 points.

Trinity 85, Connellsville 51 — The Hillers topped 20 points in three of the four quarters for a Section 1-AAAAA home victory.

Trinity (3-3, 8-9) led 22-12, 39-20 and 63-39 at the quarter breaks.

Anthony Piasecki paced the Falcons (1-5, 2-15) with 19 points.

The Hillers’ Jacob Dunkle poured in a game-high 32 points. Kaden Hathaway scored 12 and Jonah Williamson added 11.

Bethel Park 90, Ringgold 49 — The visitors rolled to a Section 1-AAAAA road victory at Ringgold.

Bethel Park improves to 4-2 in the section and 9-8 overall. Ringgold slips to 0-6 in the section and 3-14 overall.

Bethel Park’s Tanner Pfeuffer and Nick Brown shared game-scoring honors with 20 points apiece. Shawn Davis and Jack Bruckner both scored 11 points.

Daryl Tolliver led the Rams with 18 points.

Mount Pleasant 48, Charleroi 40 — The Vikings finished strong for a Section 4-AAA home win.

Mount Pleasant outscored the visitors in the fourth quarter, 13-3, to rally for the victory.

Mount Pleasant (5-2, 6-9) led 17-11 after the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime. Charleroi pulled ahead at the end of the third quarter, 37-35.

The Vikings’ Dante Giallonardo finished with a game-high 22 points.

Jackson Keranko scored 12 points and Jake Chambers added 10 for the Cougars (2-7, 7-12).

Yough 58, Waynesburg Central 50 — Terek Crosby scored a game-high 35 points to lead the Cougars to a Section 4-AAA win over the visiting Raiders.

Yough led 27-23 at halftime and 40-33 after three quarters. Austin Matthews added 11 points for the Cougars.

Waynesburg’s Cole Headlee finished with 15 points and dished out six assists. Alex Eck pulled down 11 rebounds.

Beth-Center 40, Carmichaels 34 — The Bulldogs returned home with a Section 4-AA win.

Carmichaels (0-8, 3-13) led 15-12 at halftime, but Beth-Center pulled ahead after three quarters, 28-27.

Jason Zellie (15), Santino Revi (12), and Brody Tharp (10) all scored in double figures for Beth-Center (3-5, 5-12).

Dom Colarusso scored 12 points for Carmichaels.

Fort Cherry 71, Frazier 43 — The Section 4-AA-leading Rangers scored all the points they needed in the first half for a victory over the visiting Commodores.

Fort Cherry (8-0, 13-4) led 45-21 at halftime.

Brock Alekson paced Frazier (4-4, 9-9) with 12 points. Trey Whitehead scored 11 and Dailan McManus added nine.

Derek Errett scored 17 and Shane Cornali contributed 14 for Fort Cherry.

Chartiers-Houston 54, Bentworth 47 — The Bucs gained some distance in the third quarter on their way to a Section 4-AA home win.

Chartiers-Houston (6-3, 13-5) led 26-25 at halftime. The home team outscored the Bearcats in the second half, 28-22.

Ben Hays and Lucas Burt shared team-scoring honors for Bentworth (2-7, 3-13) with 14 points each. Christopher Harper finished with 11 points.

Avery Molek (12), Justus Buckingham (11), and Nate Gregory (10) were in double figures for Chartiers-Houston.

Monessen 74, Geibel Catholic 41 — Lorenzo Gardner and Terrodric Williams combined for 37 points to lead the Greyhounds to a Section 2-A home win.

Gardner scored 23 and Williams added 14 for Monessen (5-1, 13-2). The Greyhounds led 42-23 at halftime.

Gary Tarbuk led the Gators (0-6, 0-18) with a game-high 25 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 66, Mapletown 58 — The Rockets held a one-point lead at halftime and made the advantage stand in the second half for a Section 2-A road victory.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-2, 16-6) outscored the Maples in the second half, 38-31, to secure the win.

The Rockets’ Jase Bedilion (19), Houston Guesman (17), and Dayten Marion (16) all scored in double figures.

Jeremiah Mick scored a game-high 20 points for Mapletown (1-5, 2-13). A.J. Vanata finished with 14 points.

West Greene 61, California 49 — The Pioneers kept pace with Monessen in the Section 2-A standings with a home win over the visiting Trojans.

West Greene improves to 5-1 in the section and 11-5 overall. California goes to 3-3 in the section and 4-15 overall.

Lane Allison led the way for the Pioneers with 17 points. Parker Burns scored 14 and Matt Wassil added 10.

California’s Vinny Manzell finished with 15 points and Jacob Ziolecki scored 12.

Girls basketball

Chartiers-Houston 52, Bentworth 28 — The Lady Bucs scored 34 points in the first half for a Section 4-AA home victory.

Ella Richey led Chartiers-Houston (9-0, 13-4) with 12 points. Mia Mitrik and Amelia Brose both scored 11, and Ava Capozzoli added 10.

Amber Sallee scored a game-high 15 points for the Lady Bearcats (1-8, 4-14).

Men’s basketball

Kent State-Tuscarawas 97, Penn State Fayette 87 — Penn State Fayette trailed by three at halftime, but was unable to rally in the final 20 minutes for a non-conference home loss.

Torian Jenkins led Penn State Fayette with 31 points. Dasilas Jones scored 25 points, and William DeShields added 10.

Kent State-Tuscarawas’ Kyle Schockley poured in a game-high 40 points. Kameron Schockley scored 17 points and James Roundtree added 10.

Rifle

Waynesburg Central 781-38x, Avella 751-27x – The Raiders returned home with a non-section victory over the Eagles.

Waynesburg’s Faithlyn Vukmanic was medalist with a score of 100-7x. Abbi Kidd (100-6x) and Emily Burnfield (100-4x) were also perfect.

Logan Crouse (98-6x), Emma Lawson (97-5x), Wyatt Franklin (95-3x), Joe Withrow (96-3x), and Aylah Ford (95-4x) also scored for the Raiders.

Kelly Doman was the top scorer for Avella with a score of 99-7x.
