Brown tosses 2-hitter in Lady Scots’ 10-0 win
Maddie Brown allowed just two hits and finished with two hits Thursday afternoon in Southmoreland’s 10-0 non-section home win in five innings over visiting Penn-Trafford.
Brown struck out five and didn’t walk a batter, and added a double and single in Southmoreland’s 14-hit attack. Mackenzie Keenan had the two hits off Brown, both singles.
The Lady Scots’ Amarah McCutcheon had a double, two-run home run and four RBI. Taylor Doppelheuer belted a two-run home run in Southmoreland’s seven-run second inning. Brooke McBeth finished with a bases-loaded double in the second inning and two singles.
“I believe we played well. We hit the ball and Maddie pitched well,” said Southmoreland coach Todd Bunner.
Connellsville 3, Greensburg Salem 1 – The Lady Falcons scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning for a non-section road victory over the Lady Lions.
Mallory Orndorff started the winning rally with a single. She advanced to third base on successive passed balls and scored on Rylee Dreves’ mishandled grounder.
Dreves moved to third on back-to-back passed balls and scored on Iris Burd’s mishandled hit.
Kirra Davis scored Connellsville’s first run after she tripled and scored on Cali Leichliter’s single.
Mackenzie Victor allowed three hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter for Connellsville (2-0).
Gionna Ruffman doubled for Greensburg Salem (1-1).
Baseball
Beth-Center 11, Mapletown 1 – The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning for a non-section victory over the visiting Maples.
Beth-Center led 9-1 after three innings and invoked the mercy rule with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jackson Nopwaskey earned the win for Beth-Center. He struck out 11 and walked three in four innings of work. Nopwaskey also doubled and drove in two runs.
The Bulldogs’ Brody Bebout pitched a scoreless fifth inning with a strikeout.
Ethan Varesko was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Eli Wright and Chase Bebout both had two RBI in the victory.
Spencer Yeager took the loss for Mapletown.
Boys tennis
Mount Pleasant 4, Norwin 1 – The Vikings swept the singles and split the doubles for a non-section win over the visiting Knights.
Aydan Gross dropped two games in each set in his win at No. 1 singles. Eli Duval lost only one game in his straight-sets victory at second singles. Connor Gurekovich needed a 14-12 tiebreaker to win the first set at No. 3 singles, then closed out the victory by a 6-0 score in the second set.
Carter Mates and Brandon Wilson won No. 1 doubles in straight sets.
