Grego, Nehls help Red Raiders complete sweep of LH
Wyatt Nehls slugged a pair of home runs and Austin Grego fired a four-hit shutout as Uniontown completed a two-game sweep of crosstown rival Laurel Highlands at Bailey Park in Section 2-AAAA baseball action on Tuesday.
The playoff-bound Red Raiders (5-5, 6-7) finish the section in a tie with Ringgold, whom they also swept, for third place.
Nehls hit a two-run homer and a solo shot in driving in three runs and Hunter Smitley also homered and scored twice for Uniontown. Tate Musko added a double and an RBI.
Connor D’Amico doubled and singled for the Mustangs (0-10, 1-13) who also got a double from Shane Layton. Noah Lion was the losing pitcher.
Uniontown scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on another run in the second, three in the fourth and one more in the sixth.
Ringgold 8, Albert Gallatin 6 – The Rams fended off visiting Albert Gallatin to secure a Section 2-AAAA playoff berth.
Ringgold (7-8) finishes in a tie for third place at 5-5 with Uniontown, although the Red Raiders hold the tiebreaker with a sweep of the series. Albert Gallatin (3-13) closes section play with a 3-7 mark.
Ringgold scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead.
Albert Gallatin rallied back to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning, but Ringgold countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Anthony Koziel came on in relief of starter Eddie Frizzell to earn the win. Jimmy Nash preserved the win for the save.
Spencer Behrendt, Alex Kolano and Frizzell, the bottom three in Ringgold’s batting order, all had two hits and two RBI. Behrendt and Dolobach both doubled.
Losing pitcher Geno Valenti had a double and single, and drove in a run. Alex Dolobach had a double and Evan Weakland tripled. Dolobach, Jason Myers, Kanyon Sutton and Ethan Carr all drove in one run.
Elizabeth Forward 11, McKeesport 0 – The Warriors shut out the visiting Tigers for a Section 3-AAAA victory.
Elizabeth Forward improves to 4-6 in the section and 8-9 overall. McKeesport drops to 2-8 in the section and 2-14 overall.
The Warriors’ Charlie Nigut finished with two doubles, a single and RBI. Winning pitcher Joseph Crovak allowed four hits.
Chartiers-Houston 9, Frazier 5 – Both teams scored early in the Bucs’ Section 1-AA home victory.
Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 8-7) held leads of 4-1, 6-2 and 7-5 in the first three innings. The home team added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Dylan Keilbach led the Commodores (2-8, 4-11) with two singles, a triple and four RBI. Brock Alekson finished with a double and single.
Keegan Kosek earned the win for the Bucs.
West Greene 5, Carmichaels 4 – The Pioneers completed the Section 1-A sweep with a road victory at Carmichaels.
West Greene (8-4) pulls ahead of Carmichaels in the section standings with a 7-3 record. The Mikes go to 6-4 in the section and 9-4 overall.
West Greene scored the winning run in the top of the fifth inning. The game was tied 1-1 through three innings. The Pioneers led 4-3 after four innings.
Carmichaels made it a one-run game with a single tally in the bottom of the fifth inning.
West Greene’s Morgan Kiger belted a home run and drove in three runs. Teammate Johnny Lampe went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Colin Brady added a double.
Hayden Hamilton earned the key victory.
The Mikes’ Robbie Wilson-Jones and Liam Lohr both doubled. Wilson-Jones and Dominic Colarusso had two hits apiece, while Colarusso drove in two runs.
Fort Cherry 17, Mapletown 2 – The Rangers scored 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning to roll to a Section 1-A win in three innings.
Matt Sieg had a big game for Fort Cherry (8-2, 10-2) with two doubles, a single and four RBI. Winning pitcher Dylan Lueck, Ben Demascal and Colton Temple all drove in three runs.
California 8, Avella 3 – The Trojans upended visiting Avella for a Section 1-A win.
Kris Weston had two doubles and drove in two runs for California (2-8, 3-12). West Monticelli earned the win.
Avella goes to 8-4 in the section and 9-4 overall.
McGuffey 2, Yough 1 – The Highlanders scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a Section 4-AAA victory.
McGuffey improves to 6-4 in the section and 6-6 overall. Yough slips to 4-5 in the section and 5-9 overall.
Ryan Keith struck out eight in the win. Losing pitcher Landon O’Donnell struck out seven.
Southmoreland 2, Charleroi 0 — The Scotties scored single runs in the bottom of the first and fifth innings for a non-section win over the visiting Cougars.
Winning pitcher Ty Keffer struck out seven and had a run-scoring single. Joey Bents earned the save for Southmoreland (4-9).
Brock Henderson finished with three singles for Charleroi (9-5).
Softball
McGuffey 1, Waynesburg Central 0 – McGuffey edged the Lady Raiders for a Section 4-AAA road win.
Winning pitcher Makenna Crothers allowed five hits and struck out nine for McGuffey (6-2, 10-3). Julia Barr drove in the game’s only run in the top of the first inning.
Gina Tedrow allowed just one hit and struck out 11 in the loss.
Waynesburg goes to 4-6 in the section and 6-10 overall. The loss snapped the Lady Raiders’ four-game winning streak at home.
Jefferson-Morgan 13, Mapletown 3 – The Lady Rockets rolled to a Section 2-A road victory.
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 6-4 in the section and 6-6 overall. The Lady Maples slip to 4-7 in the section and 4-9 overall.
West Greene 17, St. Joseph 2 – The Lady Pioneers scored 10 runs in the top of the second inning to roll to a non-section road victory.
Sammi Zimmerman earned her first varsity win, allowing two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. She went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Violey Hill accounted for the Lady Spartans’ runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Payton Gilbert led West Greene (8-6) with two doubles and four RBI. Ali Goodwin went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Emmaline Beazell and Madelyn Roberts both doubled. Ella Scott and Kylee Davis both drove in two runs.
