High school softball roundup: Frazier claims outright section title; Lady Mikes secure share of first place
Grace Polkabla scored the game’s only run on an errant throw as Frazier claimed sole possession of the Section 3-A softball title Monday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over visiting Jeannette.
The Lady Commodores (12-0) close section play with a 12-0 record, extending their section winning streak to 50. Jeannette finishes 10-2 in the section and goes to 11-3 overall.
Polkabla started the rally in the bottom of the second inning with a double. Polkabla came around to score on an overthrow to third base on her steal attempt.
Winning pitcher Addison Hiles allowed just one hit, a single to losing pitcher Grace Stein. She struck out 13 and walked two.
Stein gave up two hits with two walks and 15 strikeouts.
Carmichaels 10, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — Bailey Barnyak allowed only one hit, a double by Ashlynn Sndyer, as the Lady Mikes earned a share of the Section 2-A championship with a win at J-M.
Carmichaels finished in a tie for first place with Chartiers-Houston. The two split their two regular-season meetings.
Carys McConnell powered the offense for Carmichaels (11-1, 15-2) with two home runs and five RBI. Barnyak also had a strong game at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Megan Voithofer added a double.
The Lady Rockets (6-8) finish with a 6-6 section record.
West Greene 16, Avella 1 — The Lady Pioneers pounded out 19 hits in a Section 2-A road victory over Avella.
Kylee Davis and Madelyn Roberts both finished with three hits and three RBI for West Greene (8-4, 10-5). Kendra Tharp had a pair of doubles, scored three runs and drove in a pair. Emmaline Beazell had three RBI. Marissa Tharp and Payton Gilbert tripled, and Gilbert drove in two runs and scored twice.
Losing pitcher Avrey Rado had two hits and drove in the Lady Eagles’ only run.
Bentworth 12, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1 — Freshman Sydney Gonglik scattered five hits and struck out 14 in the Lady Bearcats’ Section 3-AA road win.
Bentworth (11-0, 12-4) clinched the section title with the victory. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (12-4) finishes with an 10-2 section record.
Nora Lindley led the Lady Bearcats with a triple and three RBI. Zoie McDonald also drove in three runs.
Southmoreland 8, Belle Vernon 6 — The Lady Scots tied the game in the top of the seventh inning and then scored two runs in the top of the eighth for the non-section road victory.
Taylor Doppelheuer started the game-winning rally with a one-out single. Kaylee Doppelheuer singled with two outs and both runners advanced a base when the ball was mishandled in the outfield.
Winning pitcher Maddie Brown followed with a two-run single, but was thrown out a second base for the third out of the inning.
Brown retired the Lady Leopards in order in the bottom of the inning with two strikeouts.
Brown led off the top of the seventh inning with a home run. Makayla Etling then tied the game with a two-out, solo home run.
Belle Vernon (13-6) led 5-2 after the first inning and 5-3 after three innings. Southmoreland (14-2) scored a run in the top of the fourth inning and the Lady Leopards countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Etling was a single away from hitting for the cycle. Brown had two hits and drove in three runs. Kaylee Doppelheuer and Brooke McBeth both finished with two singles and an RBI. Taylor Doppelheuer contributed three singles. Gwen Basinger had a pair of singles.
Brown struck out six and walked two.
Mia Zubovic led Belle Vernon with a home run, single and three RBI. Bella Williams, Maddie Grisnik, Sydney Stark and Sydney Callaway all drove in one run.
Penn-Trafford 14, Connellsville 3 — The Lady Falcons fell on the road in a non-section game at Penn-Trafford.
Cali Leichliter and Molly Greenawalt both had a single and drove in a run for Connellsville (11-7). Kameron Kantorik also had an RBI.
Mackenzie Keenan paced Penn-Trafford (11-5) with three singles, a home run and four RBI.
