Yellow Jackets hand Bison first PAC loss, 87-80

The Waynesburg men gave Bethany (W.Va.) its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss of the season Tuesday night with a 87-80 home victory.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 2-1 in the conference and 2-4 overall, while the Bison are 0-1 in the PAC and 5-1 overall.

Bethany held a 41-38 halftime lead. The home team held a 49-39 scoring advantage in the second half.

Waynesburg turned the game around with an 18-2 run after Bethany increased its lead to 63-56 with 12:28 left in the game. Bethany recovered with a 9-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 76-74 with three minutes remaining.

Bethany cut the deficit to 78-76 with 1:30 remaining, but PJ Suggs responded with a jumper to push the lead back to four points.

Antone Baker led the Waynesburg attack with 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. PJ Suggs (17), Jalen Goins (13), Korey Mitchem (12), and Jaylen Davis (11) all scored in double figures.

Women’s basketball

Bethany (W.Va.) 99, Waynesburg 77 – The Bison led 27-18 after the first quarter and didn’t look back for a road Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.

Bethany improves to 2-0 in the conference and 3-2 overall. Waynesburg slips to 0-3 in the PAC and 4-3 overall.

Kara McFadden led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points, including a career-high five 3-pointers. Madisen Dayton added 16 points and Julz Mohrbacher scored 16.

Hockey

Elizabeth Forward 7, Trinity 5 – The Hillers cut the gap to a goal with just under six minutes remaining, but Blake Hvozdik’s empty net goal with 31 seconds remaining was the clincher in the Warriors’ PIHL D2 road victory.

Elizabeth Forward led 2-0 after the first period on Bobby Boord Jr.’s goal at 14:29 and Riley Wright’s power play goal two minutes later.

Trinity (2-6-0-1) sandwiched goals around the Warriors’ Luke Forbes score at 12:40 in the second period.

Goals by Boord Jr., Patrick Malandra and Cam Thompson extended Elizabeth Forward’s lead to 6-3 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Malandra and Thompson scored 41 seconds apart.

Ringgold 3, Connellsville 1 – The visiting Rams led 2-1 after the first period and added an insurance goal in the third period for a PIHL D2 White Division road victory.

Ringgold’s Josh Levander scored just 30 seconds into the game. Logan Jenkins tied the game three minutes later. The Rams regained the lead for good on Bruce Santina’s goal at 8:29.

Brady Lippert scored an insurance goal at 9:37 of the third period.

Connellsville didn’t score on five power play opportunities, while Ringgold finished 0-of-4.

Ringgold’s Collin Moffett turned aside 30 shots in the win. Nick Daniels-Nimmick stopped 22 shots.
