Tournament time: Lady Vikings, Bentworth boys receive No. 1 seeds

The defending champion Bentworth boys and the Mount Pleasant girls received No. 1 seeds as the WPIAL soccer playoffs get underway this week..

The Bearcats edged Charleroi in the Class A title game last year, 3-2 in overtime. Bentworth (15-0-0) will play the winner of Thursday’s preliminary match between Chartiers-Houston (1-15-0) and California (1-8-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Peters Township Middle School.

Beth-Center (10-3-1) plays Trinity Christian (10-4-1) at Peters Township Middle School at 4 p.m.

Belle Vernon (7-9-0) hosts West Mifflin (3-12-0) in Thursday’s Class AAA preliminary match with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Moon (17-0-0) on Saturday.

Ringgold (10-7-1) plays at fourth-seeded Latrobe (12-4-1) in a Class AAA opening round match on Saturday.

The boys Class AA first round will be played on Monday.

Waynesburg Central (7-7-1) is on the road against top-seeded South Park (16-1-1). Central Valley (14-4-0) travels to Elizabeth Forward (12-4-1), Charleroi (14-1-0) hosts Seton-La Salle (12-4-0), and Mount Pleasant (13-5-0) entertains Shady Side Academy (11-4-1), while Southmoreland (11-7-0) is on the road at Mars High School against North Catholic (14-4-0).

The Mount Pleasant girls (14-1-0) open the WPIAL Class AA playoffs Tuesday when the Lady Vikings host McGuffey (8-6-1) at 6:30 p.m.

Southmoreland (10-7-0) travels to second-seeded Quaker Valley (13-2-2). Belle Vernon (9-9-0) plays at Freeport (11-1-1), while Yough (12-6-0) is on the road at Freedom against North Catholic (13-3-0).

Laurel Highlands (7-7-0) is on the road Monday at West Allegheny (13-3-1) in the first round of the Class AAA tournament. Fox Chapel (13-1-1) is the No. 1 seed.

The California girls (4-8-1) host Greensburg C.C. (5-7-0) in the Class A preliminary round on Thursday as the first game of a girl-boy doubleheader at 6 p.m. The winner plays top-seeded Springdale (13-1-0) on Tuesday at Freeport.

Waynesburg Central (12-2-0) hosts Riverview (10-3-0) in a Class A first round match on Tuesday. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (6-6-0) is on the road against third-seeded Bentworth (15-1-0)

Peters Township (16-0-1) is the top seed in Class AAAA.
