Lady Raiders’ Trimmer finishes first in TSTCA AA meet

Uniontown’s Grace Trimmer continued her successful season on Thursday by finishing first in the AA race in the TSTCA Championship held at White Oak Park.

The senior crossed the finish line on the course that will also host the WPIAL Championships in 18:25.94.

Teammates Charley Murtha (30, 21:50.58), Paisley Murtha (33, 21:25.91), and Arrington Scott (35, 21:29.40) posted top-35 finishes.

Laurel Highlands junior Isabella Baker earned a spot on the awards podium by finishing 10th with a time of 20:08.83. Belle Vernon freshman Brooklyn Steeber also medaled in 14th place in 20:23.66.

Uniontown’s Ethan Syner finished sixth in the boys AA race with a time of 16:43.34. Teammate Cooper Gilleland was 11th overall in 16:58.25.

Belle Vernon sophomore Leonidas Soto earned a medal by finishing 19th with a time of 17:22.40.

Girls volleyball

California 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Maples fell in the Section 3-A finale to visiting California.

The Lady Trojans swept to victory by the scores, 25-13, 25-18, 25-22.

Mapletown stat leaders were Marley Seward (3 kills, 7 digs), Miranda Fox (5 kills, 3 blocks), Treslee Weston (5 kills, 8 digs), and Marley Shiflett (13 assists, 6 digs).

The Lady Maples finished 1-9 in the section and 2-13 overall.

Belle Vernon 3, Uniontown 2 – The Lady Leopards won the last two sets to rally for a Section 3-AAA victory.

The Lady Raiders won the second set, 25-19, and third set, 25-21, but Belle Vernon tied the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. The Lady Leopards completed the comeback by taking the fifth set, 15-8.

Maggie Campbell led Uniontown with 25 assists, five digs and five aces. Lyric McLee finished with 10 digs, eight kills and three aces. Lexi Humberston (7 digs), Ava Livingood (8 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace), Ryleigh Jose (6 kills, 8 digs, 6 aces), and Emma Latsnic (4 kills, 2 digs) also had noteworthy performances for Uniontown.

Brownsville 3, Chartiers-Houston 1 – The Lady Falcons secured a Section 3-AA playoff berth with a four-set win over Chartiers-Houston.

Brownsville (6-8, 8-11) lost the first set, 25-23, but ran off the next three, 25-15, 26-24 and 26-24

The Lady Falcons’ Skyler Gates (24 kills, 10 blocks, 8 service points, 7 aces) and Payton Evanchak (28 assists, 13 service points, 5 aces) both finished with double-doubles. Mia O’Hern added eight service points and six digs, and Lydia Geary finished with six kills and 9 digs.

Bentworth 3, Burgettstown 0 – The Lady Bearcats swept past visiting Burgettstown to clinch a Section 3-AA playoff berth.

Bentworth (6-8, 8-10) won by the scores, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21.

Chelsea Dindal (12 kills, 3 aces), Olivia Telegraphis (12 digs), Zoie McDonald (25 assists), and Vanessa Kingsley (3 aces) led the Bentworth attack.

Carmichaels 3, Beth-Center 2 – The Lady Mikes needed five sets to defeat Beth-Center for a Section 3-A victory.

The Lady Bulldogs won the first set, 25-20, and third set, 25-17. Carmichaels (10-0, 12-6) took the second set, 25-22, and rallied for the victory with set wins of 25-22 and 15-12.

Carmichaels stats leaders were Ashton Batis (25 digs, 2 assists), Pacey Pratt (16 digs, 19 kills, 4 aces, 1 block), Bailey Barnyak (15 digs, 18 kills, 2 aces, 1 block), Brenna Walker (2 digs, 10 kills, 2 blocks), Reese Marzo (13 digs, 3 aces, 49 assists), Payton Plavi (6 digs, 3 kills), and Baylee Landau (9 digs).

Beth-Center finished with a 7-3 section record and overall mark of 12-4).

Jefferson-Morgan 3, West Greene 1 – The Lady Rockets rolled to a Section 3-A win against county rival West Greene.

Alisa Long had a double-double for Jefferson-Morgan (6-4, 7-6) with 25 digs and 11 kills. Ava Wood (15 digs), Lucca Jellots (12 digs), Kelsey Vessels (11 digs), and Leighana Gooden (11 assists) also contributed in the victory.

West Greene finished with a 6-4 section record and overall mark of 7-6.

Laurel Highlands 3, Ringgold 2 – Laurel Highlands prepped for the WPIAL playoffs with a five-set win against Ringgold in Section 3-AAA play.

Sara Reed led Laurel Highlands (9-3, 12-5) with 38 assists. Alexandra Mattey had a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Jayna Fabrey finished with a team-high 22 digs. Ayrianna Sumpter had 10 kills and Diondra Brown finished with eight blocks.

Boys soccer

Belle Vernon 2, West Mifflin 1, OT – Anthony Sawa converted Trevor Kovatch’s pass into the match-winning goal in overtime for a victory in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.

West Mifflin led 1-0 at halftime, but Belle Vernon (8-9-0) tied the match in the second half on Jackson Pressel’s goal with Brandon Yeschenko assisting.

Belle Vernon goalie Bryce Burkhart stopped four shots.

Belle Vernon plays at Moon Saturday in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.

California 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – The Trojans advanced in the WPIAL Class A playoffs with a preliminary round win over the visiting Bucs.

California (2-8) plays No. 1 seeded Bentworth in the first round on Saturday.

The Trojans (2-8) won a Class A preliminary round matchup over the Bucs (1-16) and will meet top-seeded Bentworth in Saturday’s first round.

Girls soccer

Greensburg C.C. 10, California 0 – The Lady Trojans’ trip to the WPIAL Class A playoffs in their inaugural season came to an end in the preliminary round with a loss to the visiting Lady Centurions.

Riley Kerr led the way for the visitors with five goals.

Greensburg C.C. (6-7-0) advances to play top-seeded Springdale.

California closes with an overall record of 4-9-1.

Hockey

Elizabeth Forward 4, Central Valley 3 – Cam Thompson scored a hat trick in the final 4:15 of the PIHL D2 Division game, including the game-winner with just 27 seconds remaining, to rally the Warriors to a road victory.

Blake Hvozdik scored one goal and Patrick Malanda had three assists for Elizabeth Forward (2-1-1).
