Scotties’ Smith throws 4 TD passes in 31-14 victory

Anthony Smith threw four touchdown passes Friday night as Southmoreland opened Interstate Conference play with a 31-14 victory over visiting Derry.
Southmoreland is 1-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall. The Trojans go to 0-1 in the conference and 3-3 overall.
Smith had touchdown passes of 10 and 30 yards to Elliot Premus. The freshman tossed a 35-yard scoring pass to Jackson Mickens and had a 9-yard touchdown pass to Stanley Betters in the second quarter.
Smith completed 16-of-26 passes for 296 yards. Premus caught seven passes for 155 yards and Mickens finished with three receptions for 100 yards.
Southmoreland’s Jake Kaylor connected on a 33-yard field goal and all four extra-points. Camren Phillips ran for 54 yards on eight carries.
Chartiers Valley 42, Laurel Highlands 14 – Chartiers Valley scored the final 33 points of the game to overcome a third-quarter deficit and defeat the visiting Mustangs in a Big Six Conference game.
Laurel Highlands (0-1, 3-2) took a 14-9 lead on Parker Hoff’s 40-yard touchdown run in the third quarter but Julius Best returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a TD and the Colts (1-0, 3-2) never trailed again.
Chartiers Valley followed Best’s score with a 2-yard touchdown run by Michael Lawrence, a 7-yard interception return for a TD by Anthony Mousessian and a 13-yard scoring pass from Luke Miranda to Owen Weagraff to give the hosts a 35-14 lead after three quarters.
Tayshaun Lewis, who rushed for 198 yards, added a 54-yard touchdown run in the final minutes for the Colts to cap the scoring.
Chartiers Valley led 2-0 after the first quarter after recording a safety and went up 9-0 on Miranda’s 10-yard touchdown run in the second.
Laurel Highlands intercepted three Colts passes, all by Antwan Black who returned one for a 34-yard touchdown to pull the Mustangs within 9-7 in the second quarter.
Chartiers Valley was able to contain Black offensively for the most part, limiting him to three receptions for 16 yards and seven rushing attempts for 23 yards.
Hoff led Laurel Highlands with six carries for 59 yards. LH quarterback Noah Lion completed 5 of 17 passes for 40 yards but was intercepted four times.
Thomas Jefferson 42, Belle Vernon 14 – The Jaguars scored 35 unanswered points to defeat the visiting Leopards in the Big 6 Conference opener for both teams.
Kole Doppelheuer opened the scoring in the first quarter for Belle Vernon (0-1, 1-3) with a 43-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Curtis Wade. Preston Rathway added the extra point.
Tyler Eber scored on runs of 17 and 2 yards, and Brayden White caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Luke Kosko to give Thomas Jefferson (1-0, 6-0) a 21-7 halftime lead. Kosko completed eight passes for 158 yards.
Kosko’s 1-yard touchdown run gave the home team a 28-7 lead after three quarters.
Eber’s third touchdown run of the game increased the Jaguars’ lead to 35-7 early in the fourth quarter. Eber finished with 175 yards rushing on 38 carries.
Belle Vernon stopped the scoring run on Doppelheuer’s 92-yard touchdown reception from Wade. Wade completed 7-of-19 passes for 188 yards.
California 58, Mapletown 0 – The Trojans scored three defensive touchdowns in their Tri-County South Conference home victory.
California improves to 3-0 in the conference and 4-2 overall. The Maples slip to 0-3 in the conference and 1-5 overall.
Adin Keyes returned an interception 94 yards with 54 seconds left in the first half. Keyes scored on a 30-yard run earlier in the second quarter.
Christian Ross returned fumbles 16 and 20 yards for scores on back-to-back defensive series early in the third quarter.
California’s Lee Qualk scored on runs of 49, 22 and 47 yards, and carried the ball 13 times for 150 yards.
Logan Hartley had a 38-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Williams and Alan Dennis closed the scoring on a 33-yard run.
Avella 22, Beth-Center 16 – Charles Rush scored the game-deciding touchdown in the fourth quarter to lift the Eagles to a Tri-County South Conference home victory.
Avella improves to 1-2 in the conference and 2-4 overall. The Bulldogs slip to 0-3 in the conference and 0-5 overall.
Rush scored on a 38-yard run for the lead in the fourth quarter. He opened the scoring with a 67-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and added a 9-yard touchdown pass to Nate Rankin in the second quarter.
Rush carried the ball 19 times for 277 yards and completed two passes for 71 yards.
Beth-Center’s Jonah Sussan had a 7-yard touchdown pass to Luke Amon and scored on a 5-yard run. Susan was 10-of-16 with 122 yards passing and ran for 37 yards on 10 carries. Amon caught six passes for 62 yards.
Jefferson-Morgan 42, West Greene 7 – The Rockets rolled up 531 yards in offense and Houston Guesman ran for two touchdowns and threw for two scores in a Tri-County South Conference victory over the visiting Pioneers at Parker Field.
Jefferson-Morgan (3-0, 6-0) also got a pair of touchdown runs from John Woodward, who rushed for 120 yards, before he left the game with an injury.
Guesman completed 12 of 17 passes for 174 yards and also led J-M with 148 yards on the ground.
Hayden Hamilton ran for 117 yards and kicked a pair of extra points for West Greene (2-1, 2-4).
The Rockets took a 14-0 lead on touchdown runs of 19 yards by Guesman and 12 yards by Woodward before Parker Burns got the Pioneers on the board with a 5-yard TD reception from Lane Allison to make it 14-7 with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.
Jefferson-Morgan put up the only two scores of the second quarter on Guesman’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jase Bedillion and Woodward’s 1-yard run for a 28-7 halftime lead.
The Rockets tacked on two second-half touchdowns on an 88-yard run by Guesman in the third quarter and a 31-yard reception by Deakyn Dehoet in the fourth quarter.
Dehoet had nine catches for 137 yards.
Logan Yeck was 6 for 6 on extra points for J-M.
Allison rushed for 48 yards and threw for 42 yards.
Bentworth 33, Carmichaels 15 – Ben Hays rushed for 253 yards and three touchdowns in the Bearcats’ Tri-County South Conference home victory.
Hays broke open a close game with touchdown runs of 48 and 56 yards in the third quarter.
The Mikes held the early lead on Will Murray’s 7-yard touchdown run and Cannon Bupka’s 77-yard touchdown sprint in the first quarter. Bupka carried the ball 19 times for 126 yards.
Bentworth quickly got six of the points back on Preston Jaquay’s 60-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff after Bupika’s score.
Hays scored his first touchdown of the game on a 76-yard run with 4:17 to go in the second quarter. Jaquay powered into the end zone from three yards out with 53 seconds left in the first half.
Butler 31, Connellsville 0 – The Golden Tornado shut out the Falcons for a non-conference road victory.
Alec Teff touchdown passes of 2, 44 and 12 yards for Butler (3-3). Nicolas Baggetta scored on a 1-yard run and AJ Morris connected on a 23-yard field goal.
Connellsville slides to 1-5.
Brentwood 41, Frazier 18 – Cedric Davis completed 10 of 14 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns as the host Spartans outscored the Commodores 20-0 in the second quarter on the way to an Eastern Conference win.
Davis tossed scoring passes to Forrest Betz for 22 yards, Colton Rosing for 10 yards and Daysaun Spencer for 83 yards and also ran for a 14-yard touchdown. Zach Vicklees had TD runs of 3 and 6 yards for Brentwood (2-1, 3-3).
Brady Secrest threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Kolby Stewart to pull Frazier (0-3, 1-5) within 7-6 in the first quarter before the Spartans’ second-quarter burst.
The Commodores got second-half touchdown runs of 2 yards by Derek Diamond and 5 yards by Secrest.
