Local roundup: Groves almost perfect in Raiders’ win over Prexies

Tyler Groves took a perfect game into the fifth inning and Alex VanSickle was 2 for 2 with a three-run homer as undefeated Waynesburg Central pounded host Washington in a Section 4-3A baseball game at Wild Things Park on Monday.

Groves retired all 12 batters he faced in the first four innings but the Prexies’ Tyler Bainder broke up the perfect game and the no-hitter with a single in the fifth. Groves also allowed two walks in the inning but escaped to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Groves struck out eight and also had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI.

Jack Stephenson contributed a triple, single and two RBIs for the Raiders (3-0, 7-0) who also got a triple and an RBI from Grant Pack.

William Callan took the loss for the Prexies (0-5, 1-8).

West Mifflin 12, Uniontown 2 – Jayvon Thompson had a triple and two RBIs and winning pitcher Jake Martina allowed just one earned on one hit and no walks with six strikeouts in four innings as the visiting Titans defeated the Red Raiders in a Section 2-4A game.

Braeden Andzelik and Hunter Horne both had two RBIs and a double and Caden Wills had two hits and scored four runs for West Mifflin (3-0, 7-3) which also got a double and a single from Derek Tudek and two hits from Mario Cutillo.

Land Smiley’s double was the only hit for Uniontown (0-5, 1-6) and Brayden Hinzy drove in one run. Caleb Bartock was the losing pitcher.

Softball

Belle Vernon 10, Oakland Catholic 4 – Bella Williams and Mailey Hayes both homered as the host Lady Leopards beat the Lady Eagles in a Section 2-4A game.

Williams also doubled and singled and Hayes added a single three RBIs for Belle Vernon (1-1, 3-5) which also got a triple and two singles from Kaylee Sypolt and a double and two singles from Lauren VanDivner. Sydney Callaway chipped in with a double and two RBIs. Winning pitcher Lily Crawford surrendered two earned runs on five hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts.

Sarah Weir homered and Nina Hillard doubled for Oakland Catholic (0-2, 1-3).

Mount Pleasant 9, Burrell 3 – Jenna Whipkey was 4 for 4 with a double and winning pitcher Danica Trainer homered and singled as the visiting Lady Vikings knocked off the Lady Bucs in a Section 1-3A victory.

Kendall Waters tripled, singled and knocked in three runs for Mount Pleasant (1-0, 3-3) which also got a double, single and two RBIs from Gigi Stanek and two hits, including a double, from Carly Surma. Gracie Etling added a hit and two RBIs.

Trainer allowed two earned runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Burrell (0-1, 4-4) got all of its runs in the fifth inning on Pyper Ferres’s three-run homer.

College softball

Waynesburg 16, Franciscan 0; Waynesburg 18, Franciscan 3 – The Yellow Jackets swept two games both in five innings in a PAC doubleheader at Franciscan.

Breanna Rice, winning pitcher Sydney Wilson and Mackenzie Kearns each knocked in three runs in the opener for Waynesburg (5-5, 19-8), which also got three hits from Meysa Heitmann, two hits and two RBIs from Alyssa Rager and a double from Graeson Grubbs.

Wilson (three innings) and Pressley Meadows (two innings) combined on the shutout.

Southmoreland graduate Brynn Charnesky drove in five runs with a three-run homer and a two-run double and Grubbs had three hits and two RBIs for the Yellow Jackets in the second game.

Tori Foust and Rice had two RBIs apiece and Grace Higgins, Rager and Katelynn Britenbaugh each added a double for Waynesburg. Winning pitcher Autumn Stemple gave up three runs in three innings.

Haylee Cook accounted for all of the scoring for Franciscan (1-7, 4-12) with a three-run homer.

College golf

Waynesburg places sixth – The Yellow Jackets boys placed sixth at the Peter C. Rossin Memorial Invitational hosted by Washington & Jefferson at Southpointe Golf Club.

Alan Tarolli tied for 11th overall with an 81 and Jefferson-Morgan graduate Brock Bayles was right behind with an 82 for Waynesburg which also got an 86 from Albert Gallatin graduate Matt Karpeal who finished 29th.
