Local roundup: Clark fires 1-hitter as Brownsville blanks Bentworth

Ava Clark fired a one-hit shutout, singled twice and knocked in a run as Brownsville blanked visiting Bentworth to earn a key Section 4-2A softball victory Friday.

Clark struck out 15, including 2024 WPIAL batting champion Sydney Gonglik twice, and walked none.

Alexa Pellick and Mia O’Hern each had two hits for the Lady Falcons (1-1, 3-3) who also got an RBI triple from Skyler Gates and two RBIs from Blair Long.

Brownsville went up 3-0 in the second inning with five straight hits. Clark started the rally with a single, Gates hit her RBI triple, Long singled in Gates, Emma Leigh Bailey reached on a bunt single and Lena Rechichar followed with a run-scoring hit.

The Lady Falcons made it 4-0 in the fourth when Long’s squeeze bunt brought in Lyla Gill.

Brownsville capped the scoring with a run in the fifth on consecutive singles by Pellick, Zaydee Downer and Clark.

Kyleigh Glaze was the only player to reach base for the Lady Bearcats (1-1, 4-3) with a double. Losing pitcher Willow Eckels walked none and struck out six.

Uniontown 16, Oakland Catholic 4 – Lauren White went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly and knocked in four runs as the Lady Raiders romped over the visiting Lady Eagles in a six-inning Section 2-4A game.

Graci Rodeheaver had a solo homer with two singles and winning pitcher Emmaleigh Noah contributed two hits, including a three-run homer, for Uniontown (2-2, 4-4) which also got three hits, including a double, and two RBIs from Alexa Budner and a double and a single from both Juliet White and Disaya Craggette.

Noah allowed two earned runs on five hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts. Alivia Noah chipped in with two hits for the Lady Raiders.

Madison Pullen hit a two-run homer for Oakland Catholic (0-4, 1-5) and losing pitcher Kennedy Waffensmith had a double and two RBIs.

Mount Pleasant 12, Southmoreland 11 – Danica Trainer hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to propel the visiting Lady Vikings past Southmoreland in a back-and-forth Section 1-3A battle.

The Lady Scotties (1-1, 3-3) trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth when Zoey Murphy hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run rally that put the hosts ahead 7-5.

Kendra Brunson put the Lady Vikings back on top in the top of the sixth when she followed consecutive hits by Carly Surma, Trainer and Gianna Stanek with a grand slam to make it 9-7.

The lead was short-lived as Taylor Doppelheuer bashed a two-run homer to cap a four-run outburst in the bottom of the inning that put Southmoreland back on top, 11-9.

That just set the stage for Trainer who followed two-out singles by Layla Gratzinger and Surma with her clutch blast.

Southmoreland put a runner on with one out in the bottom of the seventh but Lady Vikings second baseman Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma turned a catch into a game-ending double play.

Brunson and Surma had three hits apiece for Mount Pleasant (3-0, 5-3) which also got two hits from both Trainer and Stanek and a double from Ella Alakson. Trainer was the winning pitcher. She allowed four earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Murphy was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and Abigail Grabiak had three hits, including a triple, for the Lady Scotties who also got a double, single and three RBIs from Makayla Brown and two hits from Makayla Etling.

Jefferson-Morgan 9, Mapletown 2 – Emilee Bazzoli smashed a grand slam and also doubled as the Lady Rockets (2-0, 5-1) knocked off the Lady Maples in a Section 2-A game.

Makenna Lotspeich doubled for Mapletown (0-3, 2-6).

Baldwin 17, Albert Gallatin 0 – Reese Temme had three hits, including a home run, and Camryn Temme homered and singled as the Lady Highlanders (4-0, 8-1) defeated the Lady Colonials in a Section 4-5A game.

Mackenzie Bowen doubled and singled for Baldwin which also got two hits from Gabriella Jaquay. Winning pitcher Melina Defelice struck out five and walked none.

Ellie Seese doubled for Albert Gallatin (0-5, 2-5).

West Mifflin 3, Laurel Highlands 2 – Rylie Dobnak threw a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Lady Titans (5-0, 7-3) edged the Fillies (2-2, 3-5) in a Section 2-4A game.

Belle Vernon 6, Elizabeth Forward 4 – Taylor Beech homered, doubled, singled and knocked in two runs as the Lady Leopards upended the visiting Lady Warriors in a Section 2-4A game Saturday.

Kaylee Sypolt had three hits with a solo home run and Bella Williams also homered and added a single for Belle Vernon (3-1, 5-5) which also got a double and single from winning pitcher Lily Crawford.

Julia Resnik had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for EF (2-1, 4-2) which also got a solo home run from Addyson Nigut and a double and single from Sophie Padinsky.

Crawford gave up eight his and two walks with three strikeouts. Julia Johnson took the loss.

Track and field

Chartiers-Houston Invitational – Carter Kent (800, 2:07.83), Lee Qualk (long jump, 22-5) and Andrew Typovsky (javelin, 134-1) each won individual events for the California boys and Ella Fike (100 high hurdles, 17.71) and Ella Neil (high jump, 5-1) won individual events for the Lady Trojans at Saturday’s Chartiers-Houston Invitational.

The Trojans’ 1,600 relay team was also victorious as was the Beth-Center boys’ 3,200 relay team.

Neil was second in the triple jump (33-7.5) and the Lady Trojans’ Niamh McClaflin was second in the 1,600 (4:42.35) and 3,200 (10:41.15).

Pieper Whipkey finished first in the shot put (26-6) for the West Greene girls.

Beth-Center’s Deakyn Dehoet, who attends Jefferson-Morgan, was second to Neighborhood Academy’s DeJuan Croumbles-Booker in both the boys 100 and 200. Dehoet’s time in the 100 was 11:33, just ahead of third-place Matt Sieg (11.37) for Fort Cherry and Qualk (11:47). Dehoet ran the 200 in 22.76.
