Local roundup: Vulcans explode to 106-84 win over Gannon

Donald Whitehead Jr. poured in a career-high 30 points as host California exploded to a 106-84 victory over first-place Gannon at the Convocation Center in PSAC West men’s basketball action Saturday.
The Vulcans opened the game with a 19-5 run and the Golden Knights never got within single digits the rest of the way, falling behind by as much as 25. It’s the third time this season California has hit the century mark.
Laurel Highlands graduate Keondre DeShields totaled 23 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot for the third-place Vulcans (7-7, 12-10). Gannon (11-3, 16-6) has lost three in a row after a 15-game winning streak.
Cal, which shot 52.4 percent from the fioor, also got 20 points from Cam Polak, 15 from Kadyn Hannah and 14 from Jordyn Buchanan.
Ernest Shelton led the Golden Knights with 23 points.
Allegheny 71, Waynesburg 66 – Ryan Lang scored 20 points and Luke Barker followed close behind with 19 as Allegheny defeated the visiting Yellow Jackets in a PAC game.
Waynesburg led 34-33 at halftime but the Gators out-scored the Yellow Jackets 38-32 in the second half.
James Sitter, whose 3-pointer put Allegheny (5-9, 7-12) ahead to stay with 11:25 remaining, added 17 points.
Antone Baker tallied a game-high 26 points with 18 rebounds and four assists for Waynesburg (5-10, 7-13) which also got 14 points from Jalen Goins.
Penn State Fayette 111, Penn State Shenango 84 – Dasilas Jones made six 3-pointers in ringing up 40 points with nine assists and seven rebounds as Fayette soared past the century mark while erupting to a 27-point victory over visiting Shenango in PSUAC action.
Fayette poured in 64 points in opening up a 64-42 halftime lead.
Jesse Lawson Jr. scored 20 points for Fayette (6-5, 7-12) which also got 17 points from Landon Percinsky, 15 from Rashawn Wilcox and 10 from Zachary Hill. Percinsky and Wilcox each hit five 3-pointers. Fayette made 20 of 39 attempts from beyond the arc.
D’Montez Owens led Shenango with 25 points, Izzy Santiago added 20 and Malike Davis chipped in with 11.
Women’s basketball
Gannon 61, California 56 – Kate Ratliff and Bri Claxon scored 18 points apiece and No. 13 Gannon out-scored host California 18-12 in the fourth quarter to pull out the PSAC West victory at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans (7-7, 11-10) led 21-16, 32-29 and 44-43 at the quarter breaks before the Golden Knights (12-2, 20-3) took control in the fourth quarter.
Maddy Wheatley contributed 12 points for Gannon.
Alicia Young scored 17 points to pace Cal which also got 12 points from Talis Gilliard, 10 points from Iyahnna and eight points and 10 rebounds from Allycia Harris.
Allegheny 87, Waynesburg 78 – Emily Lauer scored a game-high 27 points and the Gators built a 52-33 halftime lead in knocking off the visiting Yellow Jackets in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (5-10, 10-10) out-scored the hosts 45-35 in the second half but the first-half deficit proved to be too large to overcome.
Sofia Genareo (17), Jess Bickart (15) and Sarah Santicola (12) also hit double figures in scoring for Allegheny (12-2, 13-6).
Kalista Friday tallied 18 points, six assists and four rebounds for the Yellow Jackets who also got 16 points and nine rebounds from Julz Mohrbacher, 14 points from Tori Wesolowski and three 3-pointers and 12 points from Mia Henkins.
Penn State Shenango 75, Penn State Fayette 46 – Hailee Aguinago had 21 points and 13 rebounds as Shenango gradually pulled away for a PSUAC victory at Fayette.
Jaysina Sellers followed with 11 points and Alli Lewis had 10 for Shenango (9-2, 11-6).
Heaven Grumm totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Uniontown graduate Geelece Ingram also scored 12 points for Fayette (1-10, 3-16). Carmichaels graduate Sophia Zalar contributed nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
Boys basketball
West Greene 57, Burgettstown 48 – Lane Allison poured in a game-high 35 points and the visiting Pioneers out-scored to the Blue Devils 25-16 in the fourth quarter to earn the Section 3-AA victory.
The win moved West Greene (9-3, 11-7) into a second-place tie with Jefferson-Morgan.
Patrick Durbin added 10 points for the PIoneers who led 22-16 at halftime before Burgettstown (2-10, 5-14) pulled even at 32-32 after three quarters.
Parker Rommes had 17 points and Sam Elich added 13 for the Blue Devils.
Monessen 71, Carmichaels 40 – The host Greyhounds racked up 30 points in the opening quarter on their way to a non-section win over the Mikes.
Jayveyon Jeffries tossed in 11 points for Monessen (12-6) with Torry Williams and Kayden Kolbeck adding 10 apiece.
Chase Ankrom tallied a game-high 15 points for Carmichaels (5-14).
Greensburg Salem 57, Geibel Catholic 50 – Tyler Martin scored 25 points to lead the visiting Lions past the Gators in a non-section game.
Geibel led 28-25 at halftime but Greensburg Salem used a 20-7 advantage in the third quarter to go up 45-35 and held on from there.
Braeden Leatherman had 11 points for the Lions (5-14).
Evan Strimel topped the Gators (11-9) in scoring with 19 points and Seth Dolan added 11.
Girls basketball
Bethel Park 57, Albert Gallatin 33 – Ella Sabatos tossed in 18 points as Bethel Park triumphed over the visiting Lady Colonials in a Section 4-5A game.
Fiona O’Neill (13) and Sadie Orie (12) also reached double figures for Bethel Park (5-4, 9-9).
Grayce Panos tied for game-high honors with18 points for Albert Gallatin (1-10, 7-11).
Monessen 55, Frazier 40 – Na’Jaziah Carter rang up 26 points and Madison Johnson added 24 as the host Lady Greyhounds (5-12) beat the Lady Commodores in a non-section game.
Chloe Harger paced Frazier (5-12) with 12 points and Malana Burton scored 10 points.
