Local roundup: Greyhounds fend off Gators, 71-61

Monessen pulled away in the fourth quarter to fend off visiting Geibel Catholic, 71-61, in a Section 2-A boys basketball battle Tuesday night.

The score was tied 26-26 at halftime and Monessen led 43-41 after three quarters before out-scoring Geibel 28-20 in the final frame.

Both teams featured well-balanced scoring attacks.

Rodney Johnson led the Greyhounds (3-2, 8-4) with 23 points, Tyvaughn Kershaw tossed in 16 and Jey’veyon Jeffries chipped in with 12. Monessen also got nine points apiece from Tayvin Craggette and Devontae Robinson.

Evan Strimel scored 15 points and Gary Tarbuk and Eahn Stevenson each added 10 points for the Gators (2-3, 7-6) who also got nine points from both Seth Dolan, who made a trio of 3-pointers, and Roman Riccelli, and eight points from John Hess.

Uniontown 75, Franklin Regional 58 – Calvin Winfrey III poured in 29 points and Notorious Grooms added 20 as the first-place Red Raiders gradually pulled away from the host Panthers for a Section 1-AAAAA victory.

Uniontown (7-0, 12-3) led 19-12, 34-25 and 54-42 at the quarter breaks.

Kelan Milson added 13 points for the Red Raiders who also got nine points on three 3-pointers from Isaac Ellsworth.

Jonah Johnston scored 18 points and Connor Crossey had 16 for Franklin Regional (2-5, 6-8).

Penn-Trafford 66, Laurel Highlands 44 – The Warriors out-scored the host Mustangs 38-17 in the middle two quarters on their way to a Section 1-AAAAA win.

The score was tied 11-11 after one quarter but Penn-Trafford (3-4, 6-6) surged to a 31-19 halftime lead and extended it to 49-29 after three.

Tyler Anthony and Brayden Stone tossed in 11 points apiece for the Warriors who also got 10 points from Evan Gross.

Antwan Black scored a game-high 13 points for Laurel Highlands (1-6, 4-10).

Riverview 50, California 47 – The Raiders rallied from a 10-point deficit by out-scoring the host Trojans 17-4 in the fourth quarter to earn the Section 1-AA victory.

Alex Schultheis led Riverview (4-3, 6-7) with 19 points and eight rebounds, and Rex Roberts followed with 15 points.

Vinny Manzella tallied 16 points and Jacob Ziolecki added 15 points for California (0-7, 2-11) which also got 10 rebounds apiece from Caden Monticelli and Niko Georgagis.

The Trojans led 18-17, 30-23 and 43-33 at the quarter breaks before the Raiders stormed back.

Waynesburg Central 87, Mount Pleasant 67 – Alex VanSickle poured in a game-high 31 points in the host Raiders’ Section 4-AAA win over the Vikings.

Waynesburg led 23-14, 46-28 and 76-47 at the quarter breaks, ringing up 30 points in the third.

Dane Woods scored 19 points and Cole Headlee contributed 18 points and eight assists for the Raiders (3-1, 3-9) who also got seven rebounds from Jack Ricciuti.

Brady Brooks led Mount Pleasant (0-5, 0-14) with 17 points and was followed by Kade Hutchinson (12), Cole Mageri (10) and Aiden Johnson (10).

West Greene 59, Beth-Center 55 – Lane Allison and Landen Hill scored 15 points points as the host Pioneers survived a 3-point barrage by the Bulldogs to pull out a Section 3-AA victory.

Patrick Durbin contributed 11 points for West Greene (5-2, 7-6).

Jason Zellie and Brayden Hull each drained five 3-pointers in scoring 24 and 10 points, respectively for Beth-Center (4-3, 7-6).

The Pioneers trailed 36-31 at halftime but out-scored B-C 18-11 in the third quarter to go up 49-47 and held a 10-8 edge in the fourth.

Canon-McMillan 64, Connellsville 54 – Michael Detrich scored 28 points as the Big Macs topped the visiting Falcons in a Section 2-AAAAAA game.

The score was tied 7-7 after the first quarter before Canon-McMillan (1-6, 3-10) pulled ahead 26-19 by halftime and held on from there.

Roman Koenemund chipped in with 18 points for the Big Macs.

Rocco Farrell and Lucas Harwood each scored 13 points for Connellsville (0-7, 3-11).

Chartiers-Houston 55, Jefferson-Morgan 38 – Justus Buckingham led a balanced attack with 14 points as the host Bucs knocked off the Rockets to take over first place in Section 3-AA.

Jefferson-Morgan (5-2, 9-4) falls into a second-place tie with West Greene and Fort Cherry.

Aaron Walsh added 12 points for Chartiers-Houston (6-1, 12-2) which also got 11 points apiece from Jake Perchinsky and Nathan Gregory.

Dayten Marien tossed in 12 points to lead the Rockets who also got 10 points from Houston Guesman.

Southmoreland 68, Brownsville 32 – Elliot Premus and Ty Whoric each scored 18 points in the Scotties’ Section 4-AAA win at Brownsville.

Noah Felentzer followed with 16 points for first-place Southmoreland (5-0, 12-2) which also got 11 points from Stanley Chapman.

Kaden Wimmer led the Falcons (1-3, 3-11) with seven points.

Bentworth 56, Frazier 37 – Ben Hays rang up 19 points in the Bearcats’ Section 1-AA victory at Frazier.

Chris Harper and Ryan Moessner followed with 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Bentworth (2-5, 5-8).

Trey Whitehead tallied 10 points for the Commodores (1-6, 3-11).

Burgettstown 77, Mapletown 50 – Lucas Stevenson poured in a game-high 26 points and the visiting Maples had their highest offensive output of the season but it was enough as the Blue Devils earned the Section 3-AA win.

Colton County led the way with 14 points for Burgettstown (1-6, 4-10) which also got 13 points from Parker Rommes.

Carson Vanata added 14 points for Mapletown (0-7, 0-12).

Fort Cherry 60, Carmichaels 41 – Shane Cornali tossed in 17 points in the Rangers’ Section 4-AA win at Carmichaels.

Evan Rogers (15) and Jack Kitzmiller (10) also hit double figures for Fort Cherry (5-2, 7-6) which had won five in a row after a 2-6 start.

Robbie Wilson-Jones paced the Mikes (2-5, 3-9) with 13 points and Dayton Reynolds added 11.

Girls basketball

Serra Catholic 68, West Greene 50 – Belle Dumbroski poured in 34 points and Abby Genes hit four 3-pointers in tallying 22 as the Lady Eagles defeated the visiting Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A game.

Serra Catholic (5-2, 7-6) led 14-7 after the first quarter and pushed the gap out to 38-20 by halftime with a 24-13 edge in the second quarter, with Dumbroski and Genes combining for 21 points in the frame.

Kenra Tharp led West Greene (3-3, 8-3) with 17 points and Madelyn Roberts added 13.

Canon-McMillan 59, Connellsville 22 – Madison Clalr scored 14 points and Sam Miller and Faye Saunders added 11 apiece as the Lady Big Macs (3-2, 8-6) beat the visiting Lady Falcons in a Section 2-AAAAAA game.

Elizabeth Painter tallied seven points for Connellsville (0-4, 3-11).

Hockey

Connellsville 11, Bishop Canevin 0 – Alex Boone’s hat trick and Tony Fleck’s four-point nick highlighted the Falcons’ Division 2 victory over the Crusaders.

Goaltender Nick Daniels-Nimmick recorded the shutout and Fleck had two goals and two assists for Connellsville which also got goals from Sam Denny, Santo Crucio, Ethan Frazee, Hunter Garlick, Braden Rodgerson and Ty Snyder.
