Local roundup: Gibson scores 26 in Lady Trojans’ victory

Hayley Gibson poured in a game-high 26 points and Leah Hartley added 20 as California recovered from a slow start to defeat host Charleroi, 68-48, in a non-section girls basketball game Wednesday night.
The Lady Cougars held an 18-16 lead after the first quarter but the Lady Trojans (8-6) surged to a 34-25 halftime advantage then put the game away with a 22-10 edge in the third to go up 56-35.
Olivia Gibson chipped in with 10 points for California.
Eden Smith tallied 20 points for Charleroi (0-19) and Emma Scobel contributed 12.
Chartiers-Houston 62, Frazier 26 – The Lady Bucs got 12 points apiece from Ava Capozzoli and Ava Kolovich in a non-section win against the visiting Lady Commodores.
Chartiers-Houston (14-4) rolled to a 20-4 lead in the opening quarter and cruised from there.
Allie Yauch led the way for Frazier (5-13) with a game-high 13 points.
Boys basketball
Waynesburg Central 60, Yough 28 – Cole Headlee had 18 points and five assists in the Raiders’ non-section win over the visiting Cougars.
Waynesburg (8-9) led 11-10 after the first quarter and 23-14 at halftime then out-scored Yough (1-18) 24-6 in the third to take a commanding 47-20 advantage.
Dane Woods followed Headlee with 14 points, Alex VanSickle added 12 points and Alex Eck pulled down 10 rebounds for the Raiders, who have won seven in a row after starting the season 1-9.
Ryan Westerman scored six points for the Cougars.
Avella 62, Beth-Center 32 – Brayden Fuller and Bryce Wright each hit four 3-pointers as the host Eagles soared past the Bulldogs in a non-section game.
Wright finished with 19 points, Fulled ended up with 12 and Nate Cilia added 11 for Avella (8-10).
Jason Zellie led Beth-Center (8-11) with 10 points.
Ligonier Valley 81, Brownsville 55 – Parker Hollick scored 33 points as the Rams defeated the Falcons in a Section 4-3A game.
Michael Wisniewski (17) and Michael Vargulish-Graver (10) also reached double figures for Ligonier Valley (4-3, 10-8).
Cam Phillips rang up 22 points to lead the way for Brownsville (2-5, 4-13).
The two teams were scheduled to meet again Thursday night at Brownsville.
Men’s basketball
Chatham 82, Waynesburg 74 – Xavier Johnson scored 33 points as first-place Chatham held off the host Yellow Jackets in a PAC game with 12 lead changes.
Waynesburg (5-9, 7-12) led 34-30 at halftime and pushed its advantage up to 38-32 early in the second half after a basket by Antone Baker. The Cougars went on a seven-point run to go up 39-38.
Rayshod Hooper’s layup gave the Yellow Jackets their last lead of the game, 42-41 with 15:24 remaining.
Chatham’s Simon Boyer tied the score with a free throw and then made a layup to put the visitors ahead to stay at 44-42.
Diaun Pickett had 20 points for the Cougars (13-1, 16-3) who also got 18 from Boyer.
Baker scored 15 points to lead Waynesburg, which also got 12 from PJ Suggs and 11 from Jaylen Davis.
Women’s basketball
Chatham 84, Waynesburg 59 – Ashlie Louden tallied 24 points and Charjae Brock followed with 18 in Chatham’s PAC win at Waynesburg.
The Cougars (11-3, 13-5) also got 12 points from Madison Nereu and 11 from Alyssa Laukus.
Kalista Friday led the Yellow Jackets (5-9, 10-9) with 12 points and Tori Wesolowski had 11.
