Puckey homers twice as Lady Scotties beat Belle Vernon

Riley Puckey smashed two of Southmoreland’s four home runs to go along with a double and two RBIs as the Lady Scotties romped over the visiting Lady Leopards, 10-3, in a non-section softball game Thursday.
Makayla Etling and Makayla Brown also both homered and doubled for Southmoreland (2-2). Etling had three RBIs and Brown added two. The Lady Scotties also got two hits apiece from Taylor Doppelheuer and Isabella Grabiak.
Winning pitcher Zoey Murphy had three walks and three strikeouts.
Lily Crawford had two hits and an RBI for Belle Vernon (2-4) which also got a double and an RBI from Sydney Callaway.
West Greene 6, Mayfield 3 — The Lady Pioneers scored four runs in the first inning and that was more than enough offense for Payton Gilbert in a victory at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Gilbert struck out six and walked five in earning the win in the circle.
West Greene’s Kylee Davis had a hit, RBI and made two above-average catches on foul pop ups. Teammate Emmaline Beazell doubled and drove in a run via sacrifice flyout in the first inning.
Katie Brudnock had a hit and drove in three runs for the Lady Pioneers (3-0).
Mayfield’s Kameron Sills struck out and walked five. Teammate Emma Melito doubled.
Greensburg Salem 4, Mount Pleasant 2 — Danica Trainer struck out 14 but the Lady Vikings fell to the Lady Golden Lions in non-section play at Mount Pleasant.
The Lady Vikings’ starting pitcher allowed four runs on five hits with one walk over seven innings.
Greensburg Salem’s Alle Scarpa countered with two runs (one earned) on three hits over seven. She had 15 strikeouts and no walks. Scarpa hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the first on a 3-2 count. Teammate Cate Waugaman hit a three-run homer in the top of the fourth. Scarpa and Hannah Olberter had two hits apiece for the Lady Golden Lions (3-0).
Kendra Brunson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs for Mount Pleasant (2-1). Brunson, Trainer and Talia Reho had one hit apiece.
Carmichaels 15, Monessen 1 – Ali Jacobs went 4 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs as the Lady Mikes hammered the visiting Lady Greyhounds in a five-inning, non-section game.
Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak had two doubles, a single and two RBIs, Kaitlyn Waggett also had three hits with a double and Ashton Batis had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for Carmichaels (3-0) which also got a single and two RBIs from Duski Staggers.
Barnyak allowed two hits and no walks with 12 strikeouts.
Grace Clingenpeel had both hits for Monessen (0-2), including a solo home run in the fourth to break up the shutout.
Albert Gallatin 16, Mapletown 2 – Gabriella Delorenzo pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Lady Colonials defeated the Lady Maples in a non-section game.
Delorenzo allowed two unearned runs and struck out three.
Ellie Seese tripled and Jenna Myers doubled for Albert Gallatin (2-1).
Mapletown falls to 2-3.
Hempfield 13, Uniontown 0 – Julia Varhola threw a five-inning perfect game and had two hits and two RBIs in the Lady Spartans’ non-section win over the Lady Raiders.
Varhola struck out 12 and Lauren Howard hit a grand slam as Hempfield remained unbeaten at 6-0. Uniontown dropped to 2-2.
Baseball
Carmichaels 13, Frazier 8 – Robbie Wilson-Jones smacked three hits, including a triple, and had two RBIs and Colin Andrews had three hits with a double and two RBIs in the visiting Mikes’ non-section victory at Frazier.
The Mikes trailed 4-3 before exploding for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Jordan Davis also had three hits and two RBIs for Carmichaels (3-1-1) which also got two hits and two RBIs from Chase Ankrom.
Winning pitcher Jas Zdravcky surrendered two unearned runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 4 ⅔ innings.
Tyler Morrison had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs and Aiden Hardy doubled and singled for the Commodores (4-2) who also got a double from Logan Solomon. Brant Alekson was the losing pitcher.
Belle Vernon 12, Uniontown 0 – Lucas Judy was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and threw a one-hitter in the Leopards’ six-inning, Section 2-4A victory at Uniontown.
Judy had 12 strikeouts with no walks.
Cole Matusik knocked in two runs with a home run and a triple and Zach Plymire had two hits and two RBIs for Belle Vernon (2-0, 4-0) which also got doubles from Parker Lind and Chace Petrosky.
Shane Kelly had the lone hit for Uniontown (0-2, 1-3). Lane Smiley took the loss.
Waynesburg Central 17, Bentworth 10 – Ethan Kiger doubled, singled and had four RBIs and winning pitcher C.J. Corwin had two hits and three RBIs in the Raiders’ non-section victory over the visiting Bearcats.
Waynesburg faced deficits of 5-0 and 9-2 before out-scoring Bentworth 15-1 from the bottom of the fourth inning on.
Corwin allowed one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in four innings of relief. Austin Surber had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for the unbeaten Raiders (6-0). Tyler Groves added a pair of hits and Alex VanSickle, Grant Pack and Jake Stephenson each smacked a double for Waynesburg which also got two hits from Derek Turcheck.
Ben Hays had two hits and two RBIs and Jacob Cavanaugh also stroked a pair of singles for the Bearcats (1-2) who also got a double from Clint Havanis. David Miller took the loss.
Mount Pleasant 8, Derry 7 – Levi Hixson’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh gave the host Vikings a non-section win over the Trojans.
Winning pitcher Cole Chatfield had two hits and an RBI, Hixson had two RBIs and Dane Firmstone tripled for Mount Pleasant (3-2) which also got a double from Carter Unger.
Jon Wasnick had three hits, including a triple, for Derry (1-2).
Greensburg Salem 13, Southmoreland 2 – Robert Visnick had a double and three RBIs as the Lions (2-2) picked up the non-section win over the Scotties.
Winning pitcher Braedon Leatherman had nine strikeouts in five innings.
Nick Lubecki had a single and an RBI for Southmoreland (1-4).
Metrolina Christian (N.C.) 12, West Greene 0 – Chase Kiker threw a five-inning shutout and Spencer Powell hit a home run as Metroliina Christian blanked the Pioneers in a non-section game at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.
Dylan Hughes had the only hit for West Greene (0-3).
McGuffey 2, California 0 – Winning pitcher Reno Presto and Brogan Meighen combined on a five-hit shutout as the Highlanders (2-2) topped the Trojans in a non-section game.
Boys tennis
Mount Pleasant 4, Greensburg Salem 1 – The Vikings defeated the visiting Lions in a Section 1-2A match.
Mount Pleasant’s Austyn Gross cruised past Tommy Shrum, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and Nico Pusula rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ian Smith at No. 3 singles.
The Vikings’ Luke Hauser and Logan Hauser won a three-set battle over Nolan McDade and Alex Swatchick at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-7(2), 7-5, and Austin Duvall and Tyler Kurtz knocked off Rocco Himes and Silas Bogert at No. 3 doubles, 7-6(5), 6-2.
Greensburg Salem’s only win came at No. 1 singles with Silas Morris beating Aydan Gross, 7-5, 7-5.
