Shriver runs for 228 yards as Yellow Jackets stomp Bethany, 48-28
Carson Shriver rushed for 228 yards and a touchdown as Waynesburg University rolled to a 48-28 victory at Bethany in a PAC game Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (3-4, 3-6) ran for 355 yards, Thomas Burke III completed 10 of 15 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns and Southmoreland graduate Isaac Trout returned a kickoff 91 yards for a TD as Waynesburg snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Bison (0-6, 0-8) scored first on a Caden Langley’s 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter but Trout took the ensuing kickoff all the way back to put the Yellow Jackets ahead to stay, 7-0.
Mutwali Stewart’s 2-yard touchdown run put Waynesburg up 14-3 later in the second quarter but Langley’s second field goal of 37 yards as time expired made it 14-6 at halftime.
Waynesburg began the second half with three consecutive touchdown drives to take a commanding 35-6 lead.
Elija Jackson capped the first, five-play, 66-yard drive with a 34-yard run. On Waynesburg’s next possession, after Jefferson-Morgan graduate Ewing Jamison recovered a fumble forced by Dailon Curry, Shriver finished a two-play, 77-yard drive with a 64-yard burst.
The third TD drive was a one-play strike with Burke throwing a 42-yard pass to Carmichaels graduate Tyler Richmond after the Yellow Jackets defense forced a turnover on downs.
Bethany snapped Waynesburg’s string of 21 points with Brett Phillips’ 9-yard touchdown pass to Mykel Davis with 3:58 left in the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets got fourth-quarter touchdowns from Stewart on a 6-yard run and Isaiah Fields on a 19-yard pass from Burke to go up 48-13.
The Bison added two late TDs on Phillips’ 1-yard run and his 11-yard pass to Jacob Burns with 1:07 left.
Phillips completed 28 of 43 passes for 286 yards and one interception, by Jaron Hale, and added 103 yards on the ground. Davis had nine catches for 126 yards.
Fields had four receptions for 36 yards and Richmond reeled in three catches for 86 yards for the Yellow Jackets. Kevin Willis had a game-high 13 tackles and Jamison followed with seven.
Waynesburg closes the season this Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Saint Vincent on Senior Day at Wiley Stadium.
