Mya Glisan of Albert Gallatin is the Herald-Standard Athlete of the Week.

Name: Mya Glisan

School: Albert Gallatin

Class: Senior

Sport: Girls basketball

Glisan’s week: Glisan needed 14 points to reach 1,000 heading into Friday night’s home game against Uniontown and wound up pouring in a career-high 31 as Albert Gallatin exploded past the Lady Raiders, 70-28. Glisan became the first Lady Colonial to score 1,000 points since Bryn Bezjak in 2021. Glisan, a 5-foot-7 senior shooting guard, hit the milestone with a fadeaway jumper in the second quarter. Glisan could sense it was going to be a special night from the start as her team prepared for the first of a girls-boys doubleheader against Uniontown. “There was so much energy there, I just felt like I was going to have a good game,” Glisan said. “We had a very big crowd and my family was there, and I just had a lot of confidence when the game started. I made my first shot and I just knew it was going to be a good game. I always give my all every game but I think I had a little extra that night. That was just like the perfect game.”

For love of the game: Glisan, the daughter of Travis and Amber Glisan of Smithfield, is a four-year starter who also plays softball and volleyball for Albert Gallatin, but basketball is her preference. “I started playing in fourth grade and I fell in love with the sport,” Glisan said. “I guess I caught on to it pretty well from the beginning because I remember everyone always telling me I was a very good player.” Albert Gallatin made the WPIAL playoffs in Glisan’s freshman season but after that the team was bumped up into Class AAAAA and, as one of the smaller teams in the classification, has struggled at times. “It’s definitely frustrating sometimes,” Glisan said. “We only have seven girls on our team so we have to try to push through being tired and hope for the best.” Glisan still has been a consistent scorer for the Lady Colonials and she entered her senior year needing 203 points to reach 1,000. “I knew I could definitely get that,” Glisan said. “So I just pushed myself and worked like I always have to make sure. That was my main individual goal. But no matter what the situation, I always try to give my all. That’s how I approach it. I love playing basketball.”

All-around player: Glisan is averaging 17 points per game this season but she also averages five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one blocked shot and is shooting 76 percent from the free throw line. “I try to do more than just score for my team,” Glisan said. “Offensively, I like to drive to the basket but I like pulling up and shooting mid-range, too, whatever is open. And if I can get it to somebody else who’s open I’ll do that. I try to get rebounds and play good defense. We normally do play man a lot and I think that’s better with us because we are quick on our feet.”

Close-knit squad: Glisan is one of three seniors on the AG roster along with Grayce Panos and Mitchell Turner. “We all get along very well, our whole team does,” Glisan said. “We’re best friends on the court and off the court. We’re always talking to each other and we hang out. We have a good connection with each other.” Glisan gets along well with her coach, Craig Hoone, also. “He’s a very good coach,” Glisan said. “He pushes us to be our best. He definitely knows what’s best for us, what we’re capable of. He’s a good man and a good coach.”

College bound: Glisan will continue her basketball and academic career at Potomac State although she’s not sure what position she will play there. “They told me they need an all-around player like me,” Glisan said. “They never told me I would be in any specific spot yet. I prefer shooting guard but I’ll play wherever. I think I’m pretty versatile and can fit into different spots in a lineup.”

Tidbits: Glisan turns 18 years old today. … Glisan also was a starter on the Lady Colonials volleyball team and is the starting shortstop on their softball team. … Glisan cited a game during her sophomore season as her most memorable next to her 1,000th-point night. “I made five 3-pointers against Southmoreland and we won,” she said. “That’s still the most I’ve made in a game.” … Glisan said she doesn’t have a favorite athlete but she tries to learn from other players. “I watch everybody,” she said. “I do try to pick up things from WNBA players and NBA players.” … Glisan said doesn’t really have a lot of hobbies. “I’m a family person,” she said. “That’s important to me. I just like hanging out with my family.” She has two sisters, Harlie Vance, 23, and Abbey Vance, 19, and one brother, Jacob Glisan, 19.
