Report: Waynesburg grad Welsh enters transfer portal

FloWrestling posted on its Instagram account Thursday evening that Ohio State University’s Rocco Welsh has entered the transfer portal.
Welsh, a Waynesburg Central graduate who won two state championships, competed for the Buckeyes as a true freshman in the 2023-24 season. He settled into the Ohio State lineup at 174 pounds, and finished the season second in the NCAA after dropping a 2-0 decision to Penn State’s Carter Starocci.
Welsh was 26-6 during his freshman campaign, but he competed in open events this season as an “unattached wrestler,” which still provides Welsh with three years of eligibility remaining.
Welsh, who competed at 184 this season, was 15-0 in winning the Clarion, Cleveland State and David H. Lehman Franklin and Marshall Opens with 5-0 records in all three events. He won all his matches by bonus points in the Clarion Open.
Welsh represented Team USA at the Zagreb Open in Croatia on Feb. 6 and earned a bronze medal.
With the report of Welsh entering the transfer portal, social media accounts have been active of where the former Raider will end up. The Nittany Lions are the front-runners so far, and with Starocci moving on after winning his fifth NCAA title, the possibility of Welsh moving into the Penn State lineup is enticing, however, nothing is guaranteed.
There has not been any confirmation from Welsh on his desire to wrestle for Cael Sanderson and the Nittany Lions, or that he has entered the transfer portal.
As of Friday morning at 8, Welsh is still on the Ohio State wrestling roster.
