Red Raiders get back on track in win over EF
Uniontown shook off a one-point setback to Belle Vernon less than 24 hours ago to down Elizabeth Forward, 77-50, on Saturday afternoon at AJ Everhart Memorial Gymnasium in boys basketball action.
Notorious Grooms led the way for the Red Raiders (2-1) with 21 points. Calvin Winfrey III had 20 and Kelan Milsom put in 17.
Isaac Ellsworth didn’t match his 10 3-pointers from opening night, but he did make four shots from behind-the-arc and scored 14 points.
Tyler Basic led the Warriors (3-2) in scoring with 17 points. Teammate Cy Herchelroath added 10.
Uniontown had a 23-15 lead after the first quarter and took a 39-30 advantage into halftime. A 16-7 edge in the third quarter and a 22-13 advantage in the fourth put the game out of reach.
Laurel Highlands 62, Ligonier Valley 47
The Mustangs jumped out to a 13-point lead after the first quarter and downed the Rams in the Derry tournament.
Laurel Highlands’ Luke Martin led the way with 25 points. Aiden Black had 14 and Antwan Black dropped 10.
Ligonier Valley (1-2) was led in scoring by Simon Pope’s 17 points. Michael Vargulish-Graver had 11.
The Mustangs (1-2) won the first period, 21-18, before the Rams had a 17-14 edge in the second. After both scored 12 in the third, LH had a 15-10 advantage in the fourth.
Albert Gallatin 81, Westinghouse 40
The Colonials jumped out early and cruised to a non-section victory against the Bulldogs.
Albert Gallatin (3-1) had a 24-5 lead after the first quarter and a 46-17 halftime advantage. The Colonials outscored Westinghouse, 18-15 in the third quarter and 17-8 in the fourth.
Albert Gallatin’s Jason Jackson scored a game-high 22 points. Teammate Shymere Wilson had 21.
Tommy Moses and Bryson Lew scored eight points apiece for the Bulldogs (0-2).
Geibel Catholic 61, Freedom 50
The Gators rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to down the Bulldogs in non-section play.
Freedom (0-2) had a 25-20 lead at the break, but the Gators (2-1) outscored the Bulldogs, 20-9, in the third and 21-16 in the fourth.
Geibel’s Evan Strimel scored a game-high 28 points. Gary Tarbuk had 14 and Roman Riccelli put in 12.
Will Kumrow led Freedom in scoring with 16 points. Teammate Adam Rhoades was also in double figures with 11.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 61, Brownsville 31
OLSH was too much for the Falcons in non-section play.
The Chargers (3-0) were led in scoring Jake Johnson, who had a game-high 25 points. Tiernan McCullough had 11.
Brownsville (0-3) was led in scoring by Preston Rosado’s 13 points.
Girls basketball
Laurel Highlands 70, Albert Gallatin 38
After both teams scored 13 in the first quarter, the Mustangs had a 16-9 advantage in the second and took control for a victory over the Lady Colonials in non-section play.
Laurel Highlands (3-0) outscored Albert Gallatin, 22-6, in the third quarter and 19-10 in the fourth.
The Mustangs’ Aierra Jenkins scored a game-high 27 points. Teammate Miya Harris had 13 and Ayrianna Sumpter put in 10.
Mya Glisan’s 14 points led the Lady Colonials (2-1) in scoring. Mikayla Shea added 13 and Grayce Panos dropped 11.
Uniontown 45, Bentworth 29
The Lady Red Raiders won each quarter in defeating the Lady Bearcats in non-section play.
Uniontown (0-1, 1-2) was led in scoring by Tessa Nicholson, who had a game-high 12 points. Teammate Emily Myers had 10.
Brielle Dillon scored nine points to pace Bentworth (1-2).
Ringgold 29, Mount Pleasant 27
The Lady Rams rallied from a six-point deficit after three quarters to top the Lady Vikings in Greensburg Salem tournament.
Mount Pleasant (0-3) had a 24-18 lead heading into the fourth before the Lady Rams (2-1) outscored the Lady Vikes, 11-3, in the period.
Ringgold’s Jada Gernot had a game-high 12 points.
Mount Pleasant’s Carmella Spallone scored 11.
Both teams are in the same section, but tournament play does not recognize the game as a league matchup.
Chartiers-Houston 55, Brownsville 34
The Lady Falcons had a six-point lead after one period of play, but the Lady Buccaneers took control in the second and third quarters for a non-section win.
After outscoring Brownsville, 27-5, in the second period, Chartiers-Houston had a 33-17 halftime advantage. The Lady Bucs extended their lead to 51-19 heading into the fourth, which the Lady Falcons won the frame, 15-5.
Ava Capozzoli led Chartiers-Houston and the game in scoring with 14. Allison Wingard (13) and Ella Richey (11) were also in double digits for the undefeated Lady Bucs (4-0).
Ava Clark had 12 points to lead Brownsville, who fell to 1-1. Teammate Skyler Gates put in 11.
