Red Raiders edged in championship at KSA Pre-Holiday Tournament
Mainland outscored Uniontown by three in the fourth quarter to edge the Red Raiders, 70-67, in the final of the KSA Pre-Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center in Kissimmee, Fla.
Uniontown trailed the Daytona Beach, Fla., school 21-16 after the first quarter, but outscored the Buccaneers, 24-18, in the second for a 40-39 halftime lead.
A 17-16 edge for Mainland in the third tied the game at 56-56 heading into the fourth where the Buccaneers had a 14-11 advantage.
Mainland’s Kade Manley had a game-high 27 points. Teammates Beegie Gordon (12), Canyon Powers (11) and Seven Simmons (10) were also in double figures.
Calvin Winfrey III had a team-high 20 points for the Red Raiders (3-0, 7-2). Kelan Milsom put in 17 and Isaac Ellsworth added 16. Notorious Grooms scored nine points.
Uniontown returns to action Friday in the Central Valley Roundup Classic at Geneva College against Abington Heights. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Belle Vernon 56, Hempfield 45 — The Leopards used a strong start in the first quarter to down the Spartans on Saturday in the WCCA Showcase at Hempfield.
Belle Vernon (2-1, 6-3) had a 15-5 lead after the opening period, and extended its advantage to 32-19 at halftime.
Hempfield (1-2, 4-4) outscored the Leopards, 14-13, in the third and 12-11 in the fourth periods.
Belle Vernon’s Trevor Kovatch had 21 points. Dominic Ghilani earned a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Boys wrestling
Nurse Pro Plus Tournament — Connellsville had six individual champions and placed second in the team standings Saturday at the Nurse Pro Plus Tournament at University High School in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Falcons’ Tommy Gretz, Nolan Rice, Jake Lilley, Kai Vielma, Evan Petrovich and Lonzy Vielma won titles.
Gretz earned the championship at 106 pounds and improved his season record to 11-0. Rice won the championship at 120, as teammate Zachary Franks had to medically forfeit. Lilley earned gold at 132. Teammate Chase Sparks was fourth.
Kai Vielma pinned his way to the championship at 138 and improved his record this year to 11-0. Teammate Trent Huffman was sixth in the same weight class.
Petrovich breezed through the competition at 157 and remained undefeated this season at 12-0.
Wrestling in front of fans he may see during his college career at West Virginia University in Morgantown, Lonzy Vielma won the championship at 165.
Landon Lynn (3rd at 113), Luke Lilley (3rd at 126), Julian Ruggieri (4th at 144), Carter Wilson (6th at 150) and Dalton Lytle (5th at 215) also placed for Connellsville, who returns to action this Friday and Saturday in the Powerade tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.
Frazier had two champions in Jonah Erdely (150) and Jackson Angelo (175). Teammate Ryan Celaschi, fresh off his 100th-career victory, was the runner-up to Petrovich at 157.
The Commodores’ Conner Reams was fifth at 285.
Southmoreland didn’t have a champion, but four Scotties reached the podium. Landon Delara (175) and David Sager (285) placed third, Kaden Shannon (215) was fourth and Shawn Hollis (150) fifth.
