Red Raiders win shootout over Penn-Trafford

Penn-Trafford matched Uniontown shot-for-shot in the first half of Friday’s Class 5A Section 1 contest at AJ Everhart Memorial Gymnasium, but as the Warriors started to fizzle out in the second half, the Red Raiders kept up their pace in a 100-85 triumph.
Uniontown improved to 10-0 in section play and 15-3 overall, while Penn-Trafford dropped to 5-5 and 8-8.
The Red Raiders need two more victories to clinch at least a share of the section championship. Uniontown is at McKeesport on Tuesday.
Red Raider junior Isaac Ellsworth scored a game-high 30 points after connecting on 11 field goals, including eight 3-pointers.
Teammate Calvin Winfrey III put in 29 and Notorious Grooms had 21. Kelan Milsom rounded out the scoring for Uniontown with 20.
Tyler Anthony led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points. Brayden Stone added 19 and Evan Gross put in 13. Zach Feldman (12) and Jack Weishaar (11) were in double figures for the visitors.
Penn-Trafford had a 12-7 lead early in the first quarter, but the Red Raiders went on a 10-0 run for a 17-12 advantage after Ellsworth made back-to-back 3-pointers, Winfrey scored in transition and Grooms fed Ellsworth for a layup with 1:56 left in the period.
Uniontown extended its cushion to as high as seven in the second quarter, but the Warriors kept battling and trailed 49-43 at halftime.
The Red Raiders went up by double digits (56-46) for the first time with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter on Ellsworth’s seven basket from behind-the-arc.
Uniontown had a 74-55 lead heading into the final frame. The Red Raiders pushed their advantage to as high as 23 at 87-64.
McKeesport 79, Albert Gallatin 73 — The Colonials rallied to force overtime, but the Tigers prevailed in the extra session and earned a Class 5A Section 1 victory.
The Tigers (4-6, 6-11) had a 49-46 lead after three quarters, but Albert Gallatin (2-8, 7-10) won the fourth quarter, 22-17, to force overtime.
McKeesport had a 13-7 edge in overtime.
The Tigers’ Lamont Perkins poured in a game-high 38 points. McKeesport’s Matt Sebellis had 16.
The Colonials’ Ethan Kennedy scored 24 points, and Jason Jackson chipped in with 19.
Latrobe 68, Laurel Highlands 40 — The Mustangs couldn’t get their offense going in a Class 5A Section 1 setback to the Wildcats at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium.
Latrobe (8-2, 16-2) had a 17-8 lead after the first quarter, and extended its advantage to 37-18 at halftime.
The Wildcats pushed their lead to 61-31 after three quarters.
Latrobe had four players in double figures, as Max Butler and Andy Tatsch put in 16 points apiece. Ian DeCerb and John Wetzel added 10.
The Mustangs (1-9, 4-13) were led in scoring by Antwan Black’s 14 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 62, Mapletown 13 — The Rockets jumped out early and never looked back in a Class 2A Section 3 win at the home of the Maples.
Jefferson-Morgan improved to 8-2 in section play and 12-5 overall. J-M’s Jeremiah Robertson had 16 points to lead all scorers. The Rockets’ Houston Guesman (14) and Jaymison Robinson (11) were in
double digits scoring.
Southmoreland 61, Charleroi 35 — The Scotties kept their undefeated record in Class 3A Section 4 intact following a road win over the Cougars.
Southmoreland improved to 6-0 in section play and 13-4 overall. The Scotties’ Noah Felentzer had a game-high 22 points. Teammate Ty Whoric added 11.
Jackson Keranko led Charleroi (2-4, 8-9) in scoring with 15 points.
Imani Christian 73, Connellsville 60 — The Falcons weren’t able to rally for a victory, but battled the Saints in Class 6A Section 2 play at Connellsville.
The Falcons (0-10, 3-14) trailed by 10 after the first quarter, but cut the deficit to 30-24 at halftime. The Saints (7-2, 10-5) used a 27-15 advantage in the third period for an 18-point lead heading into the fourth.
Connellsville outscored the visitors, 21-16, in the final frame.
The Falcons’ Lucas Harwood scored 22 points. Teammate Christian Thomas added 12.
Imani Christian’s I’Zayah Bradshaw led the game in scoring with 23 points. The Saints’ Deston Hubbard (14), Desean Gordan (13) and Markus Williams (10) were all in double figures.
Chartiers-Houston 49, West Greene 40 — The Buccaneers avenged their lone Class 2A Section 3 loss after rallying in the fourth quarter to defeat the visiting Pioneers.
West Greene (7-3, 9-7) had an 8-5 lead after the first quarter and a 27-24 halftime advantage. Chartiers-Houston (9-1, 15-2) cut the deficit to 32-31 after three periods and outscored the Pioneers by 10 in the fourth quarter.
C-H’s Justus Buckingham scored a game-high 18 points. The Bucs’ Nate Gregory added 16.
Lane Allison led West Greene in scoring with 13 points.
Serra Catholic 80, Geibel Catholic 49 — The Eagles were too much for the Gators in Class A Section 2 play at Serra Catholic.
The Eagles’ Owen Dumroski scored a game-high 25 points, as the home team had a 17-point lead after the first quarter and a 54-24 halftime advantage.
Serra Catholic’s Brayden Graham had 12 and Mark Johnson 11. The Eagles improved to 5-1 in section play and 14-2 overall.
Evan Strimel led the Gators (2-4, 9-7) in scoring with 17 points. Gary Tarbuk put in 10.
Clairton 43, Frazier 36 — The Commodores rallied back to within single digits but couldn’t pull off the upset of the Bears in Class 2A Section 1 play at Clairton.
Frazier’s Dailan McManus had a game-high 15 points. The Commodores’ Kolby Stewart put in 11.
Tahvaz Armstrong (11) and Jontere Sanders (10) led the Bears (6-2, 6-6) in scoring.
Greensburg Central Catholic 77, California 20 — The Centurions remain undefeated in Class 2A Section 1 play following a victory over the Trojans at California.
Greensburg Central Catholic improved to 9-0 in section play and 15-1 overall. The Centurions’ AJ Tarpley had a game-high 18 points. GCC’s Liam Gallagher had 17, and teammate Brady O’Rouke 13.
The Trojans (0-9, 2-13) were led in scoring by Caden Monticelli’s 12 points.
Burgettstown 63, Carmichaels 36 — The Blue Devils flew out of the gates and had a 24-point lead following the first quarter en route to a Class 2A Section 3 win over the visiting Mikes.
Parker Rommes led Burgettstown (2-8, 5-12) and the game in scoring with 20 points. Teammate Sam Elich put in 12 and Colton County 11.
Robbie Wilson-Jones led the Mikes (2-8, 3-13) in scoring with 15 points.
Girls basketball
Avella 34, Mapletown 20 — The Eagles’ defense held down the Maples in a Class A Section 2 victory at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School.
Avella (3-6, 8-9) had two players reach double figures in scoring, as Sydney Stroke had 12 and Ava Frank 11.
Cameron, W.Va. 36, West Greene 28 — The Lady Pioneers could never get going in a non-section setback to Cameron, W.Va.
Madelyn Roberts led West Greene (3-5, 9-6) in scoring with 16 points.
Maci Nedy (12) and Devon School (10) led Cameron in the scoring column.
