Lady Gators down West Greene; set up showdown with Clairton

Geibel Catholic outscored West Greene by nine in the third quarter to take control in the Lady Gators’ 52-35 victory on Saturday afternoon in a girls Class A Section 2 game at West Greene.

Geibel improved to 7-1 in section play and 14-1 overall. The Lady Gators host Clairton (6-0, 8-2) on Monday at 7 p.m. The Lady Bears handed Geibel its lone loss this season on Dec. 16.

The visitors had a 14-5 lead after the first quarter and a 27-21 halftime advantage. The Lady Gators’ 12-3 edge in the third put the game away. Geibel outscored the Lady Pioneers (3-4, 9-4) by two in the fourth.

The Lady Gators’ Emma Larkin had a game-high 33 points. She made five 3-pointers. Teammate Mallory Clemmer added 10.

West Greene’s Madelyn Roberts made four 3-pointers in scoring 14 points. The Lady Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp put in 11.

Boys wrestling

Two Falcons medal at Escape the Rock — Connellsville’s Kai Vielma and Evan Petrovich reached the podium on Sunday in the Escape the Rock tournament at Council Rock South High School.

Vielma dropped a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Ryan Kennedy of Spire Academy before rallying off for three victories to reach the consolation final at 139 pounds.

The Falcon sophomore had a 3-2 lead with 1:45 remaining in his third-place bout with Jayce Paridon of Lake Highland Prep, Fla., but was reversed and turned for a four-point near-fall in losing the match, 8-3, to finish fourth.

Paridon was the top seed entering the 66-team tournament that not only featured top teams from Pennsylvania, but the majority of the east coast in addition to squads from Ohio and nationally-ranked prep schools.

Petrovich won his first three bouts at 152 to advance to the semifinals and assure himself no less than sixth place, but he dropped a 4-0 decision to eventual champion Chase Van Hoven of Brooke Pointe, Va. Petrovich lost, 4-1, to Bishop McDevitt’s Ryan Lawler in the consolation semifinals, but finished in fifth place after a 5-2 decision over Evan Boblits of St. Mary’s Ryken, Md.

The Falcons finished 11th in the team standings with 67 points. Faith Christian Academy won the team championship with 221 team points. Connellsville was second among Class 3A schools in the state of Pennsylvania behind Bethlehem Catholic, who was ninth with 80.5 points.

Ultimate Duals — Frazier faced some tough competition in its five dual meets on Saturday, but the Commodores had several individuals win multiple bouts.

Jonah Erdely, Ryan Celaschi and Jackson Angelo went 4-0 against teams from Brookville, Chestnut Ridge, Penn-Trafford and Reynolds.

Frazier’s Emmett Erdely won three of four matches.

Girls wrestling

Lady Falcons win Sharpsville Tournament — Connellsville crowned two champions and had 10 wrestlers reach the podium in winning the Sharpsville Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Falcons’ Trinity Moore won the title at 112 with a fall in the finals. Teammate Janayah Nobles edged Laurel’s Maggie Alfera, 4-3, to win the championship at 136.

Connellsville scored 153.5 team points to defeat the host team, who had 136. Seagertown came in third with 130 team points.

The Lady Falcons’ Ravyn Cameron-Botti was runner-up at 190.

Connellsville’s Julieth Flores placed fourth at 100. The Lady Falcons had three earn fifth place in Emma Petrovich (130), Imani Cameron-Botti (155) and Olivia Shultz (170).

Jayden Wiltrout earned seventh place at 148. Teammates Rylee Leasher (112) and Lauren Porterfield (124) were eighth.
