Clemmer, Henderson, Larkin key in Lady Gators’ win

The trio of Mallory Clemmer, Ava Henderson and Emma Larkin combined for 57 points in Geibel Catholic’s 61-36 triumph over Avella on Monday in Class A Section 2 play at “The Swamp.”

The Lady Eagles gave Geibel Catholic fits during the first meeting, as the Lady Gators escaped Washington County with a 54-49 win.

Avella limited Larkin to nine points, but the Geibel junior made sure that didn’t happen again on Monday in leading the game with 24 points.

Henderson made four 3-pointers and had 18 points. Clemmer was dominant in the post with 15 points, but she stepped outside and made a 3-pointer. Clemmer pulled down 13 rebounds and had 11 blocks for a triple-double.

The Lady Gators (10-1, 17-1) never trailed, and the game was only tied at 2-2, before the home team closed the first period with an 11-5 lead.

Clemmer went on a personal 7-0 run in the second quarter to push Geibel’s advantage to 30-10. The Lady Gators had a 38-14 lead at halftime.

The Lady Eagles (3-7, 8-10) cut the deficit to 40-21 in the third quarter after opening with a 7-2 run in the first three minutes, but Geibel closed the period on a 13-0 run for a 53-21 advantage heading into the final frame.

Ava Frank led Avella in scoring with 11 points.

Brownsville 63, McGuffey 46 — Skyler Gates scored 34 points in the Lady Falcons’ Class 3A Section 3 victory over the visiting Lady Highlanders.

Brownsville (3-5, 10-7) had a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, and after outscoring McGuffey, 15-11, in the second period, the Lady Falcons took a 36-23 advantage into the halftime break.

Brownsville didn’t rest on its first-half lead, as the Lady Falcons edged the Lady Highlanders, 11-10, in the third quarter and 16-13 in the fourth.

Brownsville’s Ava Clark chipped in with 14 points. Teammate Ciara Horabik continued her strong shooting from the outside, as she made three 3-pointers for nine of her 11 points.

Taylor Schumacher led McGuffey (5-4, 11-7) in scoring with 24 points.

West Greene 58, Monessen 13 — The Lady Pioneers shut down the Lady Greyhounds in a Class A Section 2 victory at West Greene Junior/Senior High School.

West Greene had a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and a 26-7 halftime advantage. The Lady Pioneers (4-5, 10-6) outscored the visitors, 22-5, in the third period to extend their lead to 48-12.

West Greene’s Kendra Tharp had a game-high 22 points. Teammate Kylee Davis added 10.

Madison Johnson scored all 13 of Monessen’s points.

Beth-Center 51, Jefferson-Morgan 27 — Callie Dorsey had a game-high 29 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ Class 2A Section 3 road triumph over the Lady Rockets.

Beth-Center (5-2, 11-7) had a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and a 34-15 halftime advantage. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Jefferson-Morgan, 17-4, in the third quarter. The Lady Rockets (0-6, 1-15) had an 8-1 edge in the fourth.

Beth-Center’s Violet Trump was in double figures with 12 points.

Leighana Gooden led Jefferson-Morgan in scoring with 10 points.

Thomas Jefferson 73, Uniontown 23 — The Lady Jaguars were too much for the Lady Red Raiders in a Class 5A Section 4 win at Thomas Jefferson.

The Lady Jaguars (8-1, 16-2) had a 20-5 lead after the first quarter and a 42-16 halftime advantage. TJ outscored Uniontown, 19-5, in the third quarter and 12-2 in the fourth.

The Lady Jaguars’ Kaylee DeAngelo and Maggie Spell scored 19 points apiece, while teammate Riley McCabe was also in double figures with 13.

The Lady Red Raiders’ Lyric McLee and Emily Myers scored 8 points apiece.

Hempfield 58, Connellsville 36 — The Lady Spartans slowly pulled away for a road victory in Class 6A Section 2.

Hempfield’s Reagan Fisher scored a game-high 22 points. Teammate Lilly Houghtalen put in 12.

Whitney Bobish led Connellsville in scoring with 10 points.

Elizabeth Forward 59, Belle Vernon 26 — The Lady Warriors inched closer to the Class 4A Section 3 championship after a road victory over the Lady Leopards.

Elizabeth Forward improved to 10-0 in section play and 13-3 overall. The Lady Warriors are a game-and-a-half up on South Park (9-2) in the section standings. Laurel Highlands sits two-and-a-half back of EF at 8-3. The Lady Warriors have won the season series over the Lady Mustangs.

EF had a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and cruised to victory over Belle Vernon (5-5, 8-10).

The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by Mia Sostaric’s 15 points. Teammates Chloe Zombek (14) and Kaelynn Settles (10) were also in double figures.

The Lady Leopards’ Aubrey Brown, Arden Minniti and Saylor Lee scored six points apiece.

Seton LaSalle 55, Waynesburg Central 29 — The Lady Rebels came out strong and never looked back in a Class 3A Section 3 win over the visiting Lady Raiders.

Seton LaSalle improved to 8-1 in section play and 12-5 overall. The Lady Rebels’ Tiara Curry had 16 points. Teammate Addie Lonergan added 10.

Peyton Cowell led Waynesburg (3-5, 8-8) in scoring with nine points.

Chartiers-Houston 60, California 25 — The Lady Buccaneers pulled away in the third quarter to down the Lady Trojans in Class 2A Section 3 play.

Chartiers-Houston improves to 6-0 in section play and 13-4 overall.

The Lady Buccaneers’ Ava Kolovich led her team and the game in scoring with 18 points. Teammate Allison Wingard added 12.

Addison Gregory led California (4-3, 7-5) in scoring with 10 points.

Winchester Thurston 64, Frazier 27 — The Lady Bears kept their perfect record in Class 2A Section 4 intact following a home win over the Lady Commodores.

DaShae Cochran led Winchester Thurston and the game in scoring with 16 points. The Lady Bears’ Alexis Bansah had 14, and Aleah Cooper chipped in with 10, as Winchester Thurston improved to 7-0 in section play and 14-2 overall.

Malana Burton led Frazier (1-6, 5-12) in scoring with eight points.

Serra Catholic 59, Mapletown 19 — The Lady Eagles jumped out early and cruised to a Class A Section 2 home victory over the Lady Maples.

Serra Catholic’s Bella Dumbroski had a game-high 25 points, as the Lady Eagles improved to 8-2 in section play and 10-6 overall.

Teammates Nikki Sfanos (15) and Abby Jones (15) were also in double digits.

Nicole Barrera scored six points for Mapletown (1-8, 3-14).

Yough 50, Southmoreland 37 — The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Scotties by 10 in the third quarter to take control in a Class 4A Section 3 game at Southmoreland.

Yough’s Brook Kowalski scored 15 points, and teammate Carly Fitzgibbons added 14.

Oliva Aumer had 11 points for the Lady Scotties.

Boys wrestling

Butler 53, Belle Vernon 20 — The Golden Tornado earned seven victories by fall to defeat the Leopards in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class 3A dual meet tournament at North Hills High School.

Butler advanced to the first round of the tournament, and will face Bethel Park on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Belle Vernon will turn its attention to the individual postseason tournaments that begin in mid-February.

The Leopards’ Deydon Soto (139), Kole Doppelheuer (160) and Elijah Brown (215) won by fall. Rylee Doppelheuer won a 6-3 decision at 107.
